hey guys,
i'm going into my second year of college with the dell i started out with. i am, however, interested in buying one of the new macbooks. i think the macbook pro is out of my desired price range, so i have a few questions:

-do i lose anything by not going all the way and getting the pro?
-is gaming on a mac advisable? (seeing as how i'll probably get the regular macbook)
-i've heard a lot about issues regarding the news macs getting really, really hot because of the processor speed. anyone confirm or deny this?
-is it worth the pricetag to switch over from the dell inspiron 6000?

any feedback, opinions, anything is very much appreciated.

Macbook Pro's get really hot. Uncomfortably hot that you would not be able to keep it on your lap for very long. It's almost hot to the touch on the upper left corner and back left sides of the laptop.

Not sure about macbooks.

Also, why are you getting a macbook? Something about the Mac OS that appeals to you? If you are thinking of switching to a mac, make sure there is some software that only runs on a mac that you want (highly doubtful but there are a few audio programs that only run on mac).

Macbooks are not for gaming. Period. Basically, you are paying almost 30% more for a system that runs mac os. That's about it. Plus a macbook only has a 13.3 inch screen. that's friggin tiny. I dunno what you're using it for but that is not a lot of screen real estate.

MBP's are $1999 plus you'd have to upgrade the RAM to at least 1GB, which would make it $2100. That's a lot of money for a laptop with the same specs as can be found for $1100 in PC only versions.

Well well look who it is...

MacBook pros are equivalent to the old PowerBooks except they are faster and have more features. The regular MacBook is all you'll really need, but if you're gonna game don't bother with Macs at all.

Actually the new mac books with the Intel Duo chips actually are supposed to be super efficient hence they run a lot cooler than the G4,or G5 N/A and us less power. Plus I have heard a lot of good things about them.Moreover if you want you can run windows on them with "bootcamp" if you feel limited in the gaming area.As far as is it worth switching to a mac I highly recommend it. I just purcahsed a macbook pro it games very well.. I loaded up windows xp via boot camp and can play all my games natively in xp.

Mac pricing is now in line with pretty much all manufactors. The old macs are more expensive for less argument is now nill.

Macbooks have pretty much no gaming capability. Like i said earlier the pros run most games pretty nicely.

They get hot if used while plugged in wall and running intensive apps. But uplugged and surfing the net the run pretty cool and almost dead silent.

If you spec it out, a macbook pro 2ghz costs $1999 on the website. But an equivalent HP will cost about $1000. You can get TWO laptops with similar specs for the price of one macbook pro. I dunno about anyone here but Mac OS is not worth $1000.

More over, HP/Dell/Asus or any other PC notebook will allow you to upgrade your CPU. A macbook pro has it SOLDERED in. So that means no upgrade path. Just gotta spend another $2000 to get a new one.

If you bought an hp/dell/asus/acer/etc and you wanted to go from a Core Duo 1.66HGZ to a Core 2 Duo 2.66 Ghz in a year or so, you'd pay $250, put in the chip and be done.

I ended up getting a PowerBook for college, and so far have had no issues with it. In fact, I managed to convince them to replace my face plate under my Applecare warranty due to some "unnatural surface corrosion" that was probably my fault. If they charge a lot for anything, it's probably because of the reliability and that you don't have to pay anything if you are under warranty.

This isnt about laptops, but Im currently building myself a new desktop with the new Intel chips (Core 2 Duo E6600)... These new chips are awesome, the Core 2 Duo chips in particular blow the AMD out of the water.
