A question about rotary mixers!!

Rotary people help me out
I will be spinning on a rotary mixer this saturday and I would like to ask something basic about rotary mixers?

I unity gain at 12 o clock or is it all the way to the right?
In other words do you bring any channel past 12 o clock?
Sorry about the newbie-sh question.

I have never seen a rotary mixer in my life but I assume all the way to the right should be 0db.

The farther you move the knob to the right, the louder. Which mixer will you be using? The Rane 2016 is awesome. The only thing, that you really can't hear the volume until you go past 12 o'clock. Anything below that is really non existant.

Thanks for your replies.
I will be using an original urei mixer.
It's an oldshool disco smothie.
I am not even sure if they have any sort of eq module with it but either way it will be fun.

Actually never move the knob all the way to the right. You don't have gain knobs, so if you turn one track all the way up and want to mix in another one that is recorded more quiet you cannot match the volume.
No split cue either, and only tone controls on the master.

Have someone explain the mixer to you at the venue.

just have the dj before you give you a quick rundown of how it works

i usually give the dj behind me a quick tutorial (if the club likes to run into the red a bit) unless i know they've played on the system before

before i go to shows, i usually find a huge image of the mixer i will be using and then get used to where everything is from there...any questions i have i go and look for the manual. That way has worked like a charm for 2 years now.

EDIT: I look for all this stuff online...

most rotarys start at about 7:00 and max is around 5:00. i usually dont take mine past 3:00, just like if you were on a linear mixer, you shouldnt take your faders up past about 80% to allow for overhead.

the urei doesnt have eq's but its a great sounding mixer and alot of fun to use.

Don't worry

Don't worry the Urei is a super easy mixer to use. Like others have said, there are no gains. This is not a problem. Keep your channel levels around 7 to allow for quieter tracks. Just practice queing with only the incoming track in your headphones if your used to split cue. You will be suprised with the mixes you can get with a urei, and it has a sound that may get hooked on. I'd be pumped up not worried to mix on one.

If you use an Urei 1620 for mixing :

6-8 is your "linefader" and 8-10 is your "gain". It's very easy to use this mixer, but you have to spin your records in the right order. Smooth mixin' is the keyword

For what it's worth : You'll be allright! No worries!
