I have just been fitted for my custom earplugs....
As title
I have gone for the ones as used by loads of djs, including Anne savage, john digweed, Tall Paul, Pete tong and LTJ bukem. loads of other (non dj) musicians use these too.
I had read some reviews on these in various trade magazines and havent heard a bad word said about them.
they are special musicians plugs which attenuate by the same amount at all frequencies. in other words, the frequency response of the plug mimics that of the ear, so in theory everything sounds the same- just quieter.
All inclusive (fitting, moulds, filters, leather carry case, cleaning fluid and a 'wax pick' ) comes to £165.
Not exactly cheap- but you cannot buy replacement ears for any amount of cash, so as far as i am concerned it is a bargain!
Interesting experience
For anyone interested, here is the first stage of the process:
-First they chat to you about it, why you want them what they do etc- quite detailed and very helpful. You can also select different filter types (-9dB, -15dB, -25dB) depnding on the sort of environment
They then check your ears are clean (both the doctor a month ago and the audiologist today said i have one of the cleanest ear canals they have seen ) and free of wax and gunk.
They then insert a plug riiiight into your ear canal, it goes rather deep which can be a bit concerning.
You then bite your finger (which opens your jaw and hence changes the shape of your ear canal slightly for a better fit) while this coloured moulding paste is squirted into your ears. You then have to wait (while still biting your finger) until it has set, which takes about 5 or 10 mins.
You cannot hear a thing with your ears full of moulding paste, so i passed the time by perving at the very attractive audiologist when she had her back to me... nice ass
The mould is then removed and sent off to be made into the final plugs.
So in about 10 days i should have my custom plugs here.
they should look something like this:
..
I will also be comparing them to the plugs i have used up until now, which were impossible to mix while wearing due to a) the fact they stick out a bit. And b) the frequency curve is not the same as the ear, making it hard to hear musically.!
Full report and test when they arrive....stay tuned folks.
here is a linky for thse interested peeps.
