No. If I'm taking time out of my schedule and haulng all my equipment over to play at your party, I am playing my fucking music, and if you have a problem, hire a fucking hip hop DJ. I'm not the guy who was at your graduation playing top 40.

Definatley not gonna make my ears bleed for free, on my equipment.

Ah after a few times you learn to live with it.

I always get that, new to mixing but whenever at a party and everyones listening to a cd I've made or whatever, someone always wants to put some hip hop, or even worse: rock, these people didn't come to that last party, purely heavenlike it was.

Set your standards/expectations early (Not early in the night, but right away when you start playing house parties), and people will eventually just know what to expect from you

I've only ever played 1 hip-hop track out at a house party, and it was because I wanted to.

That track: The "Snakes on a Plane" rap song...

Expect to hear that oftern. I heard that line many times. Most people that go to house parties don't go for the EDM, sorry. You gotta play for the crowd while trying to please yourself. You can't always play what you want and get away with it. At house parties you'll have to play a little bit more mainstream to get the people happy.

Two weeks ago, I played at a house party where everyone was into hip hop. Then all of the sudden every one got interested in house. They actually wanted to hear me play house because they rarely hear it. So I played house remixes of popular artists so they can get a taste without overdoing it and going all the way underground.

EDM is not a trend, it's a lifestyle. You either get it or you don't.

Although I was invited to play at a friends party where people wanted to hear trance/progressive I had a similar situation happen to me. I got there pretty early and only a few people where there. About an hour later tons of people show up who I don’t recognize, turns out to be a completely different crowd than the one I was invited for. Almost immediately I started getting people coming up to me asking to play hip hop and one guy who even preceded to hum that horrific zombie nation song and demanding i play it, eck! Not only was I really pissed at this point but these people were really shady and I just didnt trust all my equipment there. I couldn’t take it any more and just packed up and left. All you can really do in that situation.

yeah man, when a friend or relative asks if i can DJ at a party first thing i usually ask if what type of event and then usually throw in the, "i dont play hiphop... i play electronic music (or house music for the layman's terms)"

and then they usually go... "ohhh.."

ive learned many times enough when it comes to house parties that unless they really really want EDM that i'll either say no to hiphop or refer them to my other DJ friend who does spin hiphop

Around here it's always d'n'b at house parties, which isn't such a bad thing.

But I was quite pleasantly surprised to turn up to one last night, to find a kitchen and garden full of people asking for dirty, driving techno my speciality

Obviously we went onto some d'n'b a bit later on when everyone was lathered... muchos fun was had by all


Personally if I'm asked to play some hip hop at a house party, I play some if I have any with me (I tend to take a fair range of stuff to house parties) - it's the one situation where it doesn't matter if you fuck up the "progression" of the night, you are literally just playing for the crowd and if you play one person's request, everyone usually goes mental to it just cos their mate loves it... no one cares if you go against your die-hard music policy and play some cheesy shit you'd never even dream of playing at a club.

If you don't want to deal with having to play different genres at house parties, either refuse to play at them (after all it's for free - no one can make you do it) or get someone else to go on for a bit and do some hip hop or whatever at some point in the night.

I've heard that from a lot of guys - I guess I just must be lucky because honestly, most of the best parties I've spun have been house parties and not club nights.

Don't get me wrong, I've had a lot of fun spinning out at clubs, but the energy and atmosphere of setting up a booth in a basement with a bunch of barrels of shit beer, sweaty ass kids dancing their asses off, and a complete lack of the pretentious attitude you get one certain club nights has been incredibly positive for me...
