Hello fellow TAs,

After watching the "The Drill" music video earlier today (download here) and being rather amused, I was wondering who "Pansy" was. My google-fu is not very good tonight and all I came up with was an interview done in french (here) and Matti Schwartz says that he will keep Pansy's identity secret for now.

Anyone have more info on this?

It is, by far, the most mesmerizing video I have ever seen. The first time I watched it...I kept watching it, and I watched it like 200 times that day....I kept returning to see it.....and my mind was flooded with questions.

Who is Pansy? Who is that girl? What's her name? How much is she getting paid for this? What's the story behind this variety routine? When was this thing made? It looks like the 1920s. Why is the cello player just going to town on it like that? Why does the camera keep zooming in on her crotch? What's up with the horse's eyes? And its mouth? I mean, seriously: WTF!? Did the horse die of natural causes? There's just so many ambiguities....it's just so bizarre. Yet addictive. You can't stop watching. This simple little clip may very well be the greatest video ever made.

In reality, if you look closely the whole thing is about a 10-15 second clip, with clever editing, reverse angles, closeups, rewinds and other trickery added to the various clips to make it seem longer and more involved, as part of some elaborate dance number.

I don't get it. But I'll keep watching. And searching for the source of the clip. As for Pansy's identity...that's part of the mystical allure....we may never know the answers behind this.

the horse was added to the the old footage with cgi, you can tell the difference with the old clip being blurry and the horse is much clearer.

ishkur, you already said that the klf - what time is love video "may well be the greatest video ever made"

and sorry to ruin the mystery and mystique of the video, because I am about to reveal who pansy was. the answer is disappointingly simple:

this is who pansy was

you THINK that the above is the answer. drizzt81 & i found that when we were looking into 'Pansy'.

the problem with the above answer is that:

1) in the video it says that Pansy lived from 1994-2005. this horse was born in 1935. horses generally live 25 years. this doesn't match.

2) the quarter horse papers say this horse is a dun. for dun colored horses, see here: http://www.ultimatehorsesite.com/colors/dun.html. the horse in the video is not a dun.

now #2 is kinda silly, but #1 kills the qh Pansy.

i think Pansy was a pet...

it's too much of a coincidence the time period of the original footage and the time period of that horse's life though, don't you think? the pansy with the lifespan of 1994-2005 is who the video was dedicated to, but that doesn't mean the pansy in the video has to be the same horse/person/thing. It can't be obviously because the video takes place in the 1920's and is dedicated to a pansy that lived 1994-2005.

so I keep my stance the pansy in the video is representing the race horse that lived during that era. The pansy that lived 1994-2005, who the hell knows. horse racing was the most popular sport back then, it was like the superbowl of today. it was common for race horses to be celebrated/laughed at in this manner as shown in the video.

To add to the mystery, the Pansy in the geneology table is the right era and age to be the Pansy in the video, but we know it's not since the pansy in the video is

1) not a dun
2) a fucking pantomime horse

It could be that the Pansy in the epitaph could be an offshoot descendent of the Pansy in the geneology table, and one not bred for competition so it likely wouldn't be in the database.

the plot sickens!

first of all, according to that link, duns vary in color from light to dark. second, that pantomine horse is modern day footage added to the original footage with cgi, the same way tom hanks was added to old footage of richard nixon in the movie forest gump, further making the color argument void. i watched a special on the movie seabiscuit where they showed old footage and photos from that era, and they had a clip exactly like this one with a dancing pantomine horse making fun of a race horse that was hyped to be the next big winner only to be the biggest letdown.

its very likely the original footage has a different looking pantomine horse behind the actual one we see. they had to overlay a new one in order to have a horse that dances perfectly matched to the song.
