OMG i can't believe it!

Vista beta 5536 is amazing! It's audio stack is beautiful to work with. Now directX even at 40ms seems to have lower latency and feels smoother then asio even under XP.

I Dj a lot using traktor and i'm just using Direct X defaults and it's so smooth to work with. Transitions just blend in and mixes sound professional without even having to even try like you used to have to do.

Very very impressed!! I'm using this for all my audio work full stop

Everyone should have a look if they get the chance. I mean i knew microsoft wanted to rework audio performance in general and perhaps DirectX 10 helps a lot but this just feels so natural and even CPU usage seems to have gone down a bit too so yeah i'm one happy camper

a screenshot of traktor running with both decks going and task manager running to show it's cpu usage

I've had to resize the image down to 1280x800 as i don't think anyone would probably appreciate it if i posted it at it's native 1920x1200 res

I think it has more to do with the fact that you've done a clean install, but Vista is supposed to be a lot better. Installed it on my lappy, and to get Aero to work I had to do some tweaks.
Didn't amaze me, but it seemed much smarter than XP.
I really liked the folder structure and organizing options in Vista.

no no this is quite beyond a simple fresh install my friend. the internal plumbing has changed quite a bit and though it does require a beefier machine to run i think it'll be good when it's finished. My post though was about how much of an improvement Direct3d was over predecessors as a workstation API which was nonexistant before to the point of now feeling very solid and even better engineered then OpenAL or even ASIO. Mind you i'm using the yesterday released beta preRC1 code that everyone has been saying good stuff about so i suggest you give it another try and you may be pleasantly surprised. As for Aero it requires a card with at least pixel shader 2.0 capabilities to do it's desktop compositing.

and it also requires a special LDDM driver that at the moment is pretty non existant because of the difference the driver has to be able to do as it has to be running 3d constantly so they're reworked DirectX to be a lot faster because it has to be. no choice in the matter anymore

Haven't the driver type been renamed to WDDM now as it's not longer Codenamed Longhorn?
I was also able to run Vista when I downloaded a modified driver and configured a modified INF file. Aero runs quite nicely on my GeForce 6600 Go.

I've tried all three public versions and Pre RC1 is still a long way from finished. There's a lot of bugs and a lot of components missing. I didn't notice any improvements in speed. When I ran it on my stationary computer my Echo Mia MIDI did not have drivers that supported Vista, so I could not test the audio performance. As for gaming I didn't detect either a increase or decrease in fps or quality.

Due to the fact that i'm using my laptop to schoolwork and programming, I'll uninstall Vista and reinstall XP again. Gonna buy the Home Premium for my desktop though.

I also have sub 1 ms asio in xp which is why i was amazed that EVEN at 40 ms Directx audio "felt" smoother and faster then asio did under xp. Thats why i was so suprised because directx audio under XP isn't particularly great

40ms can't be smoother than sub 1 ms except the values are not right. and direct x is not an audio interface, do you mean mme, wdm, or wddm?

I think I'll wait a bit before changing OS's again... I've only been using XP for less than half a year now. Before that, I was all Win2k. When I heard all those XP flaws I couldn't be bothered - until they 'scrapped' 2k.

I'm also curious to how the DirectX 'latency' works... My X-Fi also runs under 5ms (which is a whole lot less than 40ms)
