Colorado Pics

Finally managed to get some pictures loaded - wheee!

We went up to Indian Peaks Wilderness this weekend and hiked in 7.5 miles to King's Lake Plateau and camped overnight on the plateau with glaciers and the Rockies all around us. It got fairly cold at night but that's why we also packed in tequila. We saw a bunch of marmots and the little bastards made several attempts to get into the tent at night but were thwarted by the rainfly. He he he..... Anywho, here's some pictures to look at.......

The start of the hike....

Getting up there.....

The Plateau....

Looking back at the Rockies at Dusk

Personal Space Heater (aka Cimmy)

Me with Lights on the Plateau

King's Lake

Hiking Ninjas

Now, who wants to visit?

Nope, Cimmy belongs to Keith - I am her Full-Time Attention Giver and Bellyscratcher though.

How did you decide on where to camp? You were oviously following a set trail, so were their designated camping areas?

I have never been real camping, and I have always just wanted to walk out into the woods and set up a place, rather than going where I am told to go.

I cant speak for him, but here in Calgary/Banff area it depends.
a. Are you in the park? if in the national park you need a permit to set up camp in designated area. Still pretty roughing it if youre on a hike like that. Not car camping @ all.

b. If youre outside the national park you chose a flat spot with a slight grade (runoff) that looks good to you. sleeping on moss might seem like a good idea until you wake up soaked and covered in god knows what kind of bugs. Dont forget to hang anything that smells in a tree or leave outside your tent. Dont want a bear to think its nibly time in your tent.

We got a camping permit for the area ($5) and then looked at trail maps to decide where to go. Keith has been to King's Lake before so he knew the trail well enough and it is pretty distinct. It was a bit of a challenge - we climbed at least 1000 feet in the process! For areas to camp, some sites in the Wilderness Area are designated but we just picked a spot with some shelter (the brush trees) and a nice flat, semi-soft patch of grass. Camping on an open plain is not a great idea - especially with the winds getting as fast as they do up at those elevations.

It looks like we might head out again this weekend and enjoy more of the nice weather here (70 by day, 35-40 by night) and cloudless. It was 15 miles round trip with each of us carrying around 25-35 lbs on our backs. In short, my ass hurts! lol
