Trust me, I've gone through the greater part of my life living with number 2 (through school, high school, college, work, and pretty much all social environments involving people who knew me directly). It's not a good thing. Not only does it have very few benefits, but alot of people will hate you for it. As for number one, seeing as our society puts more emphasis on physical appearence than anything else, it's more likely to give you much more (undeserved) credibility and respect in the eyes of others.
