social patterns

i reeeally hate asking for "homework help" on the internet, but here's the deal... i have a paper due tomorrow for my sociology class, and i'm having a hard time figuring out what to write about. once i get an idea, it'll be easy to just bullshit my way through it, but i figured it'd be worth it to check with you guys to see if you can help me brainstorm some ideas that will actually be fun to write about.

here's the jist of it...

quote:
According to our discussion in class, the goal of sociology is to
identify social patterns and explain the causes and consequences of
these patterns. For this paper, think of some specific social pattern
that intrigues you or makes you curious. (Remember that patterns may
involve ideas, actions, or group characteristics.)

1. Describe the social pattern, why it interests you, and how it can
be seen as a variable. Identify another variable that you think is a
possible cause and explain why you think it might be a cause. Identify
a third variable that you think is a possible consequence of your
first variable and why you think it might be a consequence.

any ideas?

Perhaps you could write about how people seem to avoid acknowledgement with anyone around them in public, and how that could be related to the constant scolding as children "not to talk to strangers", or something of the like.

That's something I am always wondering... why are people so afraid of each other?

I don't know if this is the kind of thing you're getting at, but could one case study be:

Poor / low income people and why some turn to drugs, prositituion, alcoholism, gambling etc. That kind of thing? Vegas is a case and point here. I did my dissertation on it.

Failing that, why do people become c0rewhores?

yeah, drug abuse/alcoholism in low-income areas is definitely one idea that intrigues me that would also be pretty easy to write about.

i've also thought about patterns related to sex/relationships, and also the DJ/club scene, but i'm having a hard time coming up with concrete ideas for those two topics.

you can talk about drug abuse amongst young adults. People know it ruins health in the long run. yet, why do they indulge ? the obvious motivation is immediate pleasure. but at what cost ? why is teenage abuse of drugs on the rise ?

talk about humor. how people love reincorporation and the law of 3.

like someone makes a joke and people laugh, bring that subject up again and people will laugh even harder, bring it up again (timing and delivery being correct) and people will still laugh. After that, it's not even close to as funny anymore.

You could mention small talk, why people do it when nobody gives a shit about what you're going to do or what you did for your weekend. Why do humans feel the need to ask mundane questions like, "How's it going?" when they don't give a fuck? And why to people respond in kind like, for instance, "Not bad for a Monday!" *fake laughter*

That's too easy

Here's a couple of reaserch papers I've done on easy subjects;

- socially defined gender identity, hyper-sexualization of society (or in other words, why men are pressured to be super-macho and women are pressured to be submissive whores though media image and modelling) (in mine I used examples from the WWF for both genders)

- news propaganda and it's effect on cultivating fear (I did mine on fox news and CNN and conservative ideology)

- army training and resocialization (basicly, how ordinary people are transformed into killing machines through their social environment) (you can also do it on prisons, it's a similar phenomenon)

and my favorite;

- the relationship between music and society (I did mine on gangsta rap )

Maternal bonds as a recent fabrication of rich societies.

Until the end of the 19th 20th century there was no bond between a mother and her child, in many cases the children weren't even named until they were 2 or 3 as it wasn't guaranteed that they would survive. And if a child died their name was frequently given to the next baby to be born.

Today children are few, and they are treasured and become the center of attention inside the family while not contributing in anyway to the material needs of the family ( not working in the fields anymore ).

If you like the subject feel free to this great article and be inspired by it:
