hey guys.

i just want a bit of advise really - to help my own trax sit better during a mixing session.

my question is:-

how many of you find the kick of a certain track to be louder than in another and do significant eq adjustment to compensate?

when i was heavily into djing i belived that it was best to keep the tracks flat and use the level meters of each track to determine what volume i should bring them in( so they transfered well volume wise)

its just because i have realised that some tracks sound much quieter than an other track (on a hifi)with regards to ratio of kick presence vs other sounds, and then when i play them in a club they sound pretty much the same wave shape and sound simialar...

so do you think it is neccasary to boost the bass frequency on a bass/mid/high eq mixer by eg. 4db so the track coming in has the same bass level as the previous track? or does having to do this mean that the tracks is badly equalised??

I don't play out but I use the gains & also the LED level meters to get the volume just so. I usually put the incoming track a tiny fraction lower in volume to neutralise the natural increase in volume when the bass from 2 tracks is playing together, inreasing it again a tiny fraction as I'm killing the outgoing track.

Apart from that, I found sometimes tracks seem to be mastered differently - like the hi hats/snares will be massively loud so I adjust EQ's to compensate. Sometimes I've even had to end up ditching a couple of the mp3 I've bought as they were so badly mastered (really muffled or recorded too quietly to overcome by boosting gain/EQ's).

Heh. I just use my ears and adjust accordingly.

I barely even use the EQs anymore.

but in terms of adjustment you can adjust to make frequencies similiar or levelled, or you can use style. a lot of times i'll use a break down and make it seem like the incoming track (with lower kick volume/strength) is building up...its like a fakeout, so you can do it with style but there's nothing wrong with adjusting eq levels to make a good mix!

So you're pretty much just using the channel faders then?

I usually just slam up the faders and mix with the gains and lows, never usually mess around with the highs and mids.
