Filter/effects question...

Hey guys. I need some some help. I've got a DJM-400 and while the "filter" effect is sweet, you don't get nearly the type of versatility with it like you do with the "color" knob adjustment on the DJM-800 or the Xone filters. So my question is, what could I add to my setup to give me that type of filter manipulation? Would an EFX 500 or 1000 let me do it with that wheel they have? I'm kinda against buying either one just because I'd get a lot of effects overlap with the effects on my mixer (especially with the efx-500). I was also looking at the Korg Kaos 2 pad which might be what I need. Finally, if I go with, say, the Korg pad, would I be able to integrate it into my setup even though I only have a two channel mixer?
This went on a little longer that I planned, but I'd really appreciate any help you guys can give me.

Thanks,
MTM

There are some great analog filter units out there, but a lot of them are discontinued. If you want a filter, I wouldn't suggest the Pioneer units, as they're very limited. A true analog unit is the way to go. Think of the built-in filters on Xone mixers. They have low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, notch, and all-pass settings, with adjustable cutoff and resonance, and LFOs.

Available now:

Allen & Heath Xone:VF1
Vermona Action Filter II
Vermona Cross Filter

Discontinued:

Electrix Filter Queen
Electrix Filter Factory
Stanton DJF-1

Edit: I just noticed that you have a DJM-400. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a send/return, so you would either have to run the filter (or effects unit) between the master out and your amp/speakers, or you could buy one filter for each deck.

So if I ran it through the master out (via an rca splitter?), basically I'd get the filter effect but it'd ONLY be on the master out sound and not limited to a particular channel...right?

Thanks for the help.

There was a thread about filters a while back, and one of the options that came up was the Alesis Philtre. A couple people bought them and apparently they were really good.

See if you can find that thread, someone posted a link to a place where they were selling them for $50.

Sounds like the guys got you covered as far as stand alone filters go. Just a quick note from EFX1000 perspective. Again, sorry I haven't used a DJM400 or DJM800 so not fully up on with the effects on either unit or the colour adjust so I can't say how different they are to the EFX1000 filter. I can't compare the EFX1000 to the stand alone filters either.

You don't use the EFX jog wheel for filter as its a beat effect, instead you use all the controls on the left hand side of the unit. You can however effect any combo of lows, mids & hi's, adjust the effect timing & also apply/adjust whatever variables you want with the 3 control knobs (depth, character & mix).

I bought my EFX1000 off someone who just bought a DJM800 & said he didn't use it any more. I find that I do use it even with the 50+ effects on my DJM909 as I prefer the EFX1000 for some effects & the 909 for others (plus there's no wah on the 909 )

If you can get an EFX1000 for a good price then it's well worth considering. Hope that was of some use m8

+1 EFX-1000 is a wicked effects unit ineed even with DJM-800 you will never feel you went overboard.
