They gotta start the technology somewhere. First the walking robot (which is still not mastered) then other locomotive tasks. Its pretty impractical, agreed.
But its just another step in the process.

I'm guessing it has nothing to do with a 'robot biking' and everything to do with a robot being able to balance.

It would be much easier to get something to balance going downhill, because of the accerlation. When something is going up hill, it is moving slowly and even losing speed, which makes balancing that much harder.

Pretty different if you ask me.

Just think about the direction of motion, and the alignment of the wheels.

Although you do have a good point, that you could probably adapt the gyros from the segway to work in this case, but this company surely wants to showcase its own technology.
