Re: REVIEW: Pet Shop Boys @ Hummingbird Centre (Oct-11-2006)

ok, concert reviews on TA are not the norm...but it's some good earlier EDM of sorts
Hummingbird Centre...so reasonably low production, which is fine, because the Pet Shop Boys have been around for 20+ years and really don't need to put on some ridiculously extravagant show for their fans. They had these giant moveable cubes that would light up and act as screnes for images, portions of their video, etc...they'd move them around, have people inside them, etc. Simple, but kind of cool. Maybe someone else who went has pics to post, because I can't describe them too well. Very mixed crowd...mostly 30-40 somethings, I'd say...healthy mix of gay and straight.
the thing with the Pet Shop Boys is, while they do have some excellent beats (for early drum machine type music), the overiding uniqueness of their sound, IMHO, is the calm, smooth and almost serene vocals of Neil Tennant. He truly has one of the more identifiable singing voices among his peers and just has this elegant, distinguised stage presence about him. That singing style also lends incredibly well to being able to continue one's career for a long time...and his voice is pretty much as good as ever. not bad for a guy in his early fifties.
The two dancers were equally deliberate and calm...mixes of modern and break dancing stuff at times...but all at a slower, 'chill' pace.
They performed most of the big hits and pretty much everything I wanted to hear:
Left to My Own Devices
Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money)
Flamboyant
I'm with Stupid (funny images of UK/USA flags, Bush and Blair, lol)
Can You Forgive Her
Numb
Domino Dancing
Minimal
Always on My Mind
Where the Streets Have No Name (cowboy theme was interesting)
West End Girls
It's a Sin
Go West
I'm missing a few...and can't ID a couple of new tracks...scanning a list now, I think the only songs I missed hearing were New York City Boy and Being Boring. I try to avoid listening to a ton of music by a band before going to their concert, just to remain surprised at how much I forgot of their material.
anyone who went could not possibly have missed the kid who had a front row centre ticket along with two older girls. no exaggeration, this kid was half the entertainment and had more energy than the dancers on stage.
he was probably 12 (at the most) and must have been the biggest fan in the building...dancing like any of you dance to your favourite EDM track. I'm talking hands in the air, jumping, clapping, drumming...just going nuts for the most part. he knew every song...every intro...every drum roll and beat...and just danced his little ass off for the entire freakin' show. It was awesome, lol.
I wondered how the fuck this kid becaome such a fan. Sure, some of us discovered music that was around before we were born or made when we were quite young...but generally legends...for me the Stones, Bob Marley, Miles Davis...or whomever you like. But why the Pet Shop Boys for him? I just found that strange...but cool, because I think the Pet Shop Boys are great.
A idea floated around the group is that this kid will eventually also discover that he's a homosexual, but that's another debate for another day
(kidding...but a 50/50 chance, given the audience, lol)
Cool show...not mind blowing, but quite fun. I'm glad I was able to see one of the few groups I grew up listening to yet hadn't seen live...I think I own their stuff on vinyl, cassette, CD and mp3...unusual to see that.
good times!
I know a few others here went...what did you think? |
+1
You read my mind!
And as for the kid, he seems to have been weaned on 80s music as he was at the ABC concert I went to at Republik and danced with the same vigour then. He truly loves his tunes. I said to my friend (who recognized him first) that he is perhaps mildly autistic and music is his passion. He truly was a joy to watch and reaffirmed to me that most people in the world are miserable. I said to Gambler that I would love to have him in my pocket to cheer me when I am down and remind me that life is for living... and dancing to. So in paying homage to him, I danced all the way to work this morning
The concert could have been 400 decibels louder for me though, i hate it when I can hear my tuneless singing over the performers
