The socio-economic stratification in America right now is a lot bigger deal than many think. I'm not implying a completely causal relationship, but it would seem to me that the growing disparity between rich and poor, right and left, blue collar and white collar, etc. could be large source of problems for many young people growing up in America right now, particularly young white males.
This of course would lead into the whole "Men in Crisis" theory that is popular among contemporary sociologists, which is perhaps validated by many of these incidents.
This is most certainly pure speculation on my part, and I'm by no means an expert, but there's a fair amount of sociological evidence to support the hypothesis.
