NateS - Human-powered - Full

http://www.myspace.com/trancednate - the first song on the list.

I expect the production values are low, since I'm just starting out, but I'm looking for feedback on the general structure of the song as well as an idea of what genre you'd say it is. Part of the trouble I have with my own music is just identifying what the hell type of music it is. I'd say it's trance-ish (~143bpm if I recall correctly) but it sounds mellower at points.

Thanks in advance!

Another Link

I have no idea what's the normal "preferred" site, but some guy just posted using Speedy Share and it seems to work.

Without further ado - [[ LINK REMOVED ]]

Hope you enjoy it.

Nice melody, think the kick could be a bit loader. Like the sounds in the background but needs more variation. However, a nice track!

Thanks for the review, Akia. I will take the comment on the kick to heart - I sorta realized that in retrospect since I've worked on about six tracks since this, but as it was my first, I wanted to see what people thought.:-) Thanks again!

Reviewing while listening:

I think the kick is perfect for the style of your track. but you have to try and bring the instruments of the track more smoothly. don't leave them just playing the one after the other. i used to do that but it is better if you let them start playing in the background and then bring them slowly in the front. Also, you should try and use more sound effects. Another thing you could try, is to play a little bit with stereo tricks. For example a hihat playing on the left, a drum on the right...

Nice track anyway for a begining!

nice track indeed for a starter !
first thing that would help your track is filling it up with more percussions for example bongo's hihats snares etc
thereby I would also recommend to do some sounds research because the sounds you use are a little out dated, at least the way you use them. I don't know what kind of track you ultimately want to produce but the melody sounds nice, as well as the layering
keep it up!!

Thanks for the detailed comments!

FC: You're totally right. When I started this track, I hadn't yet figured out how to apply volume/panning/fx envelopes, so most of that song's effects are limited to a tiny amount of straightforward compression/reverb/delay applied throughout. Without the envelopes, I wasn't really able to blend things in smoothly like I wanted to. I think I'm getting the hang of using the fx more judiciously and have figured out how to apply envelopes, so when I come back to this I will keep your suggestions in mind.

Takkra: I agree about the percussion, especially having been away from this song for a month or so now. I'm trying to get the hang of dropping in little percussive treats to vary things up, and studying released stuff to get a better sense for how to apply it. I was a bit too shy to hack into my synths so that was mostly done with presets which is probably why it sounded dated - will have to fix it.:-)

I'm glad that the melody generally seems to be working. Guess I just need more persistence & patience with the smaller details! Thanks again for the listens & tips!
