Internet Explorer 7 Released

quote:

Microsoft Corp has released Internet Explorer 7 (IE 7) for Windows XP, which comes with significant security enhancements, making everyday tasks easier.

Talking about IE 7, Dean Hachamovitch, general manager - Internet Explorer team, Microsoft, said, "We listened carefully to our customers, and are delivering a safer browser that makes the tasks they do every day much easier."

To tackle the changing nature of online security threats, IE 7 provides protection against malicious software and phishing attacks. It helps reduce exposure to these attacks by fortifying the browser itself, and providing the user with better information and assisting him/her in making more informed decisions.

IE 7 delivers a new look and enhanced capabilities such as tabbed browsing. With tabs, users are able to view multiple sites in a single browser window, and switch from one site to another. IE 7 also sports 'Quick Tabs' that provide an "at a glance" snapshot of all open tabs on a single screen, enabling easier and faster site selection and navigation.

According to Microsoft, financial institutions and security vendors such as PayPal and VeriSign are supporting the newest generation of the browser IE 7, and also encouraging their customers to upgrade to it. Microsoft also says that the new version is designed keeping in mind developers and IT managers, and that it has been engineered for compatibility with existing Web sites by adhering to some of the most important standards for Web site development.

IE 7 for Windows XP is available in English, and runs on Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows XP 64-bit Edition, and Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1. And, it will be made available in other Windows-supported languages over the coming weeks.

Windows IE 7 is available for free download at http://www.microsoft.com/ie for genuine Windows users. Microsoft will begin distributing IE 7 as a high-priority update via automatic updates in November 2006.

Is anyone using this?

I'm thinking of giving it a try since Firefox has managed to erase all my bookmarks every time the program updates, even when using 2.0. Maybe it has something to do with the computer but I don't lose anything giving IE 7 a try.

Yes, I'm trying it out right now. I'm not impressed.

Compared to IE6, the UI is actually less customizable, which is disappointing to say the least. It also feels sluggish performing basic operations compared to IE6 - starting the program, loading cached web pages into the browser, and other operations seem to take noticeably longer. Now, as someone who long used IE6 over Firefox precisely because I found it to run faster - this is something I am not pleased about. In these respects, IE7 is a noticeable step backwards. Not good.

Still, there are some benefits. The overdue inclusion of tabbed browsing is a plus (although it takes up too much space on the interface in my opinion.) Some of the new security options are probably useful, although I don't really have issues with spyware anymore even with IE6.

I'm going to continue to use this for a while to see if it grows on me, but unless I find a way to speed up operation and clean up the interface I'll likely go back to good old IE6.

It blows.

And the sad thing is that everyone will have it soon. It will be a 'critical update'.

If you want to block that update:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/up...nouncement.mspx
You have to download the file, extract the files, then go to a command prompt to install the blocker. The instructions are in the file IE70BlockerHelp.htm which gets extracted from the downloaded file.

I dont know how your bookmarks go after FF2 updates. I have it at work and 2 puters at home. Ive never had that problem.

User error maybe?

Or you could turn automatic updates off all together.

Run: Services.msc

find Automatic Updates... turn it off. Then disable it.

I'd rather not like micronuts force feeding my operating system shit after shit every week.

MMM thanks yes make me bloated, yea I love it, give me more. mmmmm excess. yes update my IE6 to 7. punish me... tasty MMM better user experience MMMM I love.

Fuck that.

It MESSED up a few sites I normally visit, and it has this strange glossy effect on text (forgive me, but I did not care to find out why). Only good thing is that it now has tabs. But I still don't like it.

In conclusion, IE7 is garbage.

it's bound to be rubbish before you even try it. Everything MS releases is rubbish for the first 6 months.

The fact that the GUI and features have ripped firefox is enough alone not to even try.

The only purpose to have IE installed is Windows/Microsoft update, and that rare occasion when u want to test something with a different brouser.

Ripped firefox?

Tabbed browsing has been around a long time before firefox.

InternetWorks... then Opera. All in 1994, before Firefox was even a sperm.

So, I've given up on IE7 for now and removed it from my system. If they continue to improve on it, it may eventually be worth installing. But I'm not holding my breath.
