Production software

hey. I've been DJing for about a year now, but am looking into producing my own tunes. Have tried a demo version of ableton but theres not much you can do with it also the full version is a bit pricey! Is there any software available on the net that i could try just to get a feel of production set-up, preferably free? I know nothing's free in this world, but there must be something out there to get me started. Any feedback would be brilliant. Cheers

Have you tried the software Reason from propellerheads? Its a good start, it has all the synths and effects to make a good track.

Read about it and download the demo here! http://www.propellerheads.se/

Cheers
C

What?! Are you INSANE?!

If you cannot produce full songs in Ableton Live you:

a) are not using the software to its fullest potential.
b) lack the requisite knowledge to use the software to its fullest potential.
c) have not invested the time and effort into using said program in order to obtain that requisite knowledge in order to use the program to its fullest potential.

If you have done all the above and still no dice you should:

d) Sell all the music making gear you own including your tables and blow all the cash on coke and hookers. ITS YOUR ONLY HOPEEE>>>..

Re: Re: Production software

he has a demo version, that's why there isn't much he can do with it (he probably can't even save his work.... )

Phrazor is a great program, almost free (50$). I really love that program and the way it handles patterns and sequences. Couple that with any of the million free vst plugins out there (www.kvraudio.com) Synth-1, Triangle II, Xhip, Polyiblit, Loopa-Zoid and DR Fusion 2 (all you'll ever need for percussion!) are all nice plugins... read the sticky post in this forum

For 100% free, try my favorite, Jeskola Buzz. It's getting a bit old now, hasn't been updated in a long time, and some of the generators don't work (crash the program). If you have trouble with it, PM me

Also check Mackie Tracktion, more powerful than Phrazor, not as powerful as Live (???) 99$

Ide say start learning to use the best now (cubase, ableton latest version) to get ahead of the game.

I spent js under a year with reason then got to a dead end with the limited sound you can get out of it (unless you put a hell of a load of time in) but its not worth it when you can get such a variety of good quality sounds with ableton or cubase (i used cubase personally) and wish I had started on cubase first off.

you know ive used ableton a few times and i just cant seem to grasp the concept behind it... maybe it was the versions or the system i used it on.... but it just seemed like a waste of time imo....... but hey to someone just starting im sure itd be a great tool instead of some other software out there

How about energyXT? It's just €39. Surely you can miss that 'little'?
And then combine it with the free VST's Low Profile mentioned.
That'll be more than enough to keep you busy for a while.
Have a look yourself at http://www.xt-hq.com/
Version 2 is coming out in the near future,
so you might want to keep that in mind. Good luck!
