i have started doing this more (with my sennheisers)- i find it easier to get more from my headroom.

what do you guys think?

im talking about average bedroom setups using sub £1000 monitors (not pro designed studio rooms with very expensive monitors and reverb traps etc).

so do you think it is easier to mix etc using a good pair of studio headphones or using the average non pro setup?

I wouldn't really do that. I find the stuff I do with headphones sounds a lot different on the monitors than I thought.

But I guess if it works...

i mix on my headphones and my speakers. have 2 different mixes and keep whichever one sounds the best. sometimes my headphones are better depends how i feel at the time also.

You can mix on headphones, and you can mix on a pair of guitar amps, and you can mix on laptop speakers. Would I recommend any of those? No, not really.

It's more important to understand the sound characteristics of your own setup than it is to have really expensive equipment, but with better monitors that's going to be a lot easier (there isn't much to know - what you hear is what you get).

The real "gotcha" with headphones - and in general any setup without a subwoofer or heavy-duty monitors - is the bass. It's not that you can't hear the bass on headphones, you actually can with many models, but it's much harder to hear muddiness.

headphones are great for composition but not as good for mixing. I've got a pair of nice sennheisers and a pair of KRK rp-8's and my mixes have been loads better using the monitors. i always double check things on the headphones though.

well i think that some people prefer to mix on headphones rather than monitors and especially people who are always in many studios not just in one or (own) studio cauz the bass is different from one studio to another so u get a different sound.So they prefer to mix using headphones and take the headphones with them to mix on them in all studios

I listen for different things but the thing you need to be careful with when using headphones is that it's easy to get subdued in focusing on particular elements that may be less audible on a monitor system.

I also find that with Senns, if I rely totally on using them my over all mixdown gets too bass heavy as they have a very flat response.

It's always easy to over do bass in phones so you need at least two other ways of checking, how it sounds. I usually check on Mrs. Nem's stereo and my suround sound as well.
I also check an MP3 on her iPod, and listen to the mix in Mono to see how things balance out when you don't have stereo widening.

The mono thing is somewhat of a dying art but if you speak to many engineers they will still test it in mono, as you can never tell what the end user will be listening to your track on.
Problem being that if thrown into one channel, frequencies that were panned can start to cancel eachother out.

Just my two cents.

I also use both.

But i definitely prefer monitor speakers for the "live" feel and the bass.

The stereo imaging is also so different.

And i realise i tend to blast in my headphones which is damaging my ears.

But headphones are best at night to keep my neighbours at bay.

Just stick to what you most comfortable at.

I used headphones to, but I bought some new genelec 8030s 3-4 days ago and Its a huge differance , It points out the errors much better and makes the mixing part much easyer, but I still Use my Phones DT250s and my creative labs 2.1 speakers to A/B with while producing, overall You can use only phones to mix in and stuff but I would recomend doing it in monitors, and reference with other speakers/phones.

you probably could but i'd imagine you'd loose most of the great frequencies that you get with quality well placed speakers. down side to using headphones as well is ear infections.

I'd say layer your track with you headphones then mix it down and master it with your monitors......
