Review: Joey Beltram @ Footwork
You know its oldschool when hardly anyone on TA has any hype about this guy....A LEGEND just came thru TO, and there were like 5 TA's there... wow. 14.5 yrs ago was the last time I saw this guy spin! (age alert), but wow, was it good to hear him again! Techno fans should kick themselves for missing out.
Got to Footwork w/Dallas & endless summer (Gabi) during Jelo's set. He was playing some funky tunes, but it seemed that once or twice during the set, songs would end, and a totally new style would start up.
Crowd seemed a little thin at first, but seemed to pick up when Joey came on. Ran into Skipper, Mobius, High on PSI & Asian Kevin (forever a lurker). Due to having been woken up at 7:30am yesterday and unable to unfortunately not squeezing a nap in before the outing as I'd hoped (and probably that joint too, lol) definitely had an effect on my energy level. As good as the music was, I spent the entire 2 hr set sitting down, sometimes fading in and out of conciousness, but don't get me wrong- I was really enjoying the music! He played an amazing techno set. Carlos was able to ID 2 of Beltram's older tracks, and that's about it. At one point early on, I swore it sounded like "Energy Flash" was about to come on, but the song never came to fruition. The crowd was really up for it, lots of cheers shouted out.
Got Beltram to autograph my "Future" rave shirt (the only commemorative old school rave shirt I have, complete w/DJ's names on the back, that I have from a rave in Maryland back in JUNE 1992 - the first/ last time I ever saw Beltram). Explaining this shirt to Skipper even earned me a 'bow down' from her, lol. Wish you coulda stayed to hear his set, Sarah.
Hopefully someone brings Beltram back again soon, and not in another 6 yrs.
~waits for Carlos's review, who said it was 'the best techno set he ever heard'~
