i'm stuck with Cingular for another year, and i've been using the same shitty Motorola phone for almost 2 years now. i don't want to upgrade to another phone thru them because i'll have to sign another 2-year contract, and i don't know that i want to stay with Cingular after my contract is up. i also don't want to pay $175 to terminate my plan... but i really want a new phone.
i know very little about unlocked cell phones, but from what i gather, all i need to do is purchase a GSM unlocked phone and insert my SIM card? is that correct or is there more to it?

any advice would be much appreciated.
yep thats basically it, the unlocked phone is obviously gonna be more expensive than branded, but it's worth it.
i'm thinking of getting a couple different unlocked phones to pop my sim in and out of depending on where im going and communication needed.

yeah... expensive for sure, but i was hoping to find one for around $150. i just hesitate to buy them from sketchy sites or eBay.
I suggest going into a cel phone store (non branded) and askign what's up.
In europe and asia its no big thing. North American + Cel phones = MEGA LOSE.

works really great if u buy like a prepaid contract with no monthly fees.
yeah, that's the same here. I had my brothers phone when he left for canada. He was on orange & I'm on O2, so I paid £10 & had it unlocked by a guy on the market in town who does it, then just put my o2 sim in & have used it fine

actually even if you get a locked T-mobile phone its easy to get it unlocked. Buy a locked T-mobile phone will probably save you lots of money as well. Just have a friend who has t-mobile call T-mobile and have them tell the Customer service rep that They are planning to go over seas and need their phone unlocked. They will ask for an IMEI number of the phone and email the unlock code within 2 days. They do not check to see if thats is the actually phone that the person is using. I know, that' how i got my phone unlocked

i don't even think non-branded cell phone stores exist around here. everything is carrier-specific...
when i had SprintPCS way back in the day they were awesome, but it seemed like everything went downhill once i switched to Cingular. maybe it's just the way cell phone providers are nowadays, but when i was with Sprint they did sooo much cool stuff for good customers who were with them a long time. offered discounts on plans, gave me earlier night minutes, etc... but with Cingular, i can't even get a fucking hug from them. cold-hearted bitches.
