the cops fucked up big time by failing to follow a shitload of procedures, the most critical being that the undercovers should have never approached the car to begin with. they should have radio'd the uniformed cops who were standing by near the scene to avoid this sort of confusion. because they suspected they were making a highly prized gun collar, however, they decided to move in, lest someone else take the credit for the arrest.
procedure was shitted on in numerous other ways as well, from the way shots were fired, to the communication between undercovers and their lieutenant, to the way the sting was conducted inside.
and while the cops doing the shooting were a mixed-race bunch, the fact that yet another unarmed black guy was bucked down in a hail of bullets makes it very much a racial issue.
the larger, and stupider issue, is why expend all this manpower and money -- and ultimately create a shitty situation where people die -- all to make prostitution busts at a strip club in the first place...
bloomberg's coolheaded response prevented racial violence from exploding that first weekend, but if these cops don't at the very least lose their badges, there might be some minor shit in the streets -- nyc is overdue for a riot. last one was in washington heights in '93 after kiko garcia was gunned down.
