Virgil Goode - lovely man

With bigoted thoughts like these, who needs enemies?:

quote:
Thank you for your recent communication. When I raise my hand to take the oath on Swearing In Day, I will have the Bible in my other hand. I do not subscribe to using the Koran in any way. The Muslim Representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and if American citizens don't wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran. We need to stop illegal immigration totally and reduce legal immigration and end the diversity visas policy pushed hard by President Clinton and allowing many persons from the Middle East to come to this country. I fear that in the next century we will have many more Muslims in the United States if we do not adopt the strict immigration policies that I believe are necessary to preserve the values and beliefs traditional to the United States of America and to prevent our resources from being swamped.

The Ten Commandments and "In God We Trust" are on the wall in my office. A Muslim student came by the office and asked why I did not have anything on my wall about the Koran. My response was clear, "As long as I have the honor of representing the citizens of the 5th District of Virginia in the United States House of Representatives, The Koran is not going to be on the wall of my office." Thank you again for your email and thoughts.

In case you live under a rock, this Republican Congressmen has a problem with the newly elected Democratic Congressmen Keith Ellison from Minnesota who also happens to be a Muslim. Ellison also will not be swearing himself into office on the Bible (Oh GOD NO!!!!!!!), but on the Kuran instead.

Which really is kinda interesting in of itself - why would a person of one religion swear themselves in on the book of another religion? When was that ever appropriate? I'm not even sure if they have to swear in with their hands on any book, but someone else can look into that.

Of course this has caused some serious flack, but our Good bigoted Republican has not backed down:

I wish more people would take a stand and stand up for the principles on which this country was founded.

That's nice. Perhaps he should listen to another Virginian, one that's slightly more famous than him:

quote:
Whereas Almighty God hath created the mind free; that all attempts to influence it by temporal punishments or burthens, or by civil incapacitations, tend only to beget habits of hypocrisy and meanness, and are a departure from the plan of the Holy author of our religion, who being Lord both of body and mind, yet chose not to propagate it by coercions on either, as was in his almighty power to do; that the impious presumption of legislators and rulers, civil as well as ecclesiastical, who being themselves but fallible and uninspired men, have assumed dominion over the faith of others, setting up their own opinions and modes of thinking as the only true and infallible, and as such endeavouring to impose them on others [...]

Be it enacted by the General assembly, that no man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship, place, or ministry whatsoever, nor shall be enforced, restrained, molested, or burthened in his body or goods, not shall otherwise suffer on account of his religious opinions or belief; but that all men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinion in matters of religion, that that the same shall in no wise diminish, enlarge, or affect their civil capacities.

So what did our terrorist, vitriolic hate-filled Muslim Congressmen say in return?:

quote:
The Virginia lawmaker criticized for writing an "Islamophobic" letter to his constituents would be wise to learn more about Islam, the first Muslim elected to Congress said Thursday.

Minnesota Rep.-elect Keith Ellison told CNN that he is not angry about a letter Virginia Rep. Virgil Goode wrote that said Ellison should not be allowed to place his hand on the Quran during his unofficial swearing in ceremony.

"I think the diversity of our country is a great strength," Ellison told CNN's Wolf Blitzer. "It's a good thing that we have people from all faiths and all cultures to come here."

...Ellison responded to Goode's sentiments by saying that he would like to meet with Goode to talk about Islam and find some "common ground."

"We all support one Constitution, one Constitution that upholds our right to equal protection, one Constitution that guarantees us due process under the law, one Constitution which says there is no religious test for elective office in America," Ellison said.

Blitzer asked the new lawmaker-elect directly if thought Goode is a "bigot."

But Ellison refused to partake in what he characterized as "name calling."

...The congressman-elect said he looks forward to meeting Goode.

"What I'd tell him is that there might be a few things about Muslims that he might want to know," said Ellison. "He might want to know that Muslims -- there are about 5 million in the country -- that they are here to support and strengthen America.

"They are nurses, doctors, husbands, wives, kids, who just want to live and prosper in the American way and that there's really nothing to fear," the new lawmaker said. "And that all of us are steadfastly opposed to the same people he is opposed to, which is the terrorists, so there is nothing to be afraid of.

"And, that what we should do is to tell our constituents -- we should reach to each other and not be against each other and we should find ways for common ground."

Ellison then said he'd like Goode to reach out to leaders at mosques and synagogues to encourage understanding and tolerance of the country's variety of religions.

What angry, vile, hatred language our newly-elected Islamofascist demonostrates! I say ban him and set up prison camps for ALL Muslims just like him! Doesn't he know that this is a Christian Nation? Doesn't he know that immigrants like him are NOT welcome?

Nevermind the fact that he's not an immigrant, and that his family ancestors have been on our soil for over 250+ years - if our GOP Christian Congressmen calls him a Muslim immigrant, then he's a fucking immigrant, dammit!

Oh, just for fun, let's see what Goode would say if he were referring to Jews:

quote:
"If American citizens don't wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Jews elected to office ... I fear that in the next century we will have many more Jews in the United States if we do not adopt the strict immigration policies that I believe are necessary to preserve the values and beliefs traditional to the United States of America."

But hey, he didn't say that - he said it about Muslims instead. And we ALL know, of course, that all Muslims are terrorists and they attacked us on 9/11, so no worries. They are not REAL Americans anyway.

Oh, BTW, repeated calls have been made to the two outgoing GOP majority leaders in Congress and the Senate, yet the only thing heard on the other end of the line are crickets chirping. What's wrong, GOP, not willing to support your bigoted wing man here?
