Here's my little review on it:
Few weeks ago, my parents switched from Cablevision to Verizon. We got the whole deal. We've been with Cablevision for so long, they just wanted to try something different for a change. I was against it because it's just going to be a hassle to remove the wires running through the walls and install a new service, but now it ain't so bad.
We had the IO Digital Cable Service, Optimum Voice, and of course Optimum Online. The speeds were recently upgraded on Optimum Online (OO) and I thought nothing could've been better. Now that I got Verizon Fios, the download/upload speeds seem to be a few tabs faster than OO. I've gotten no problems with this so far. Their online service runs through the Wireless router. The router is a bit bigger, but no cable modem obviously. You can even upgrade your speed later on should you choose to do so. Like 20/10 or something like that. The default is 10/2 mbps (10mbps Download/2mbps Upload) which is the same as OO. But this seems a bit faster as I mentioned.
We're paying almost the same as when we were with Cablevision it seems. Honestly, if you have Cablevision, I'd just stick with that. Verizon's Customer service is horrid though. They say they would call you back to figure out a problem you have instead of putting you on hold, and they don't. This happened when there was an issue with the Video Feed information uploading. It took us almost a whole week to get everything set up in our home. Having 3 different technicians coming to finalize the installation of the Cable boxes in the house. The Fios for the online serivce took this guy almost the whole day to set up. He went out to get some coffee only to come back over an hour later
The last thing I do want to mention is that when I called Cablevision for my parents to disconnect the service, the Cablevision Rep on the phone was asking me the reason for terminating the service. I then told him that my parents were switching to Verizon. He was letting me know immediately that the rates for Verizon will increase later in the year, something that Verizon wouldn't mention. How much of that is true, I don't know. He also said that he could match the monthly billing price we were getting from Verizon. But with a little push with my voice saying no to his statements, he gave up. They had no problem terminating the service.
The email system for Optimum Online was said to disconnect in 4 weeks as a grace period. Mine terminated in about 2-3 days. So basically, if you have the Optonline Email Server going through Outlook Express, you can still receive email from that server, but can no longer send outgoing mail. So now, changing emails and letting everyone know that you have a new email is a bit of a hassle as well.
I think I summed up everything. If anyone has questions, you can ask me since I've been through this transition and seen the pros and cons of Cablevision Vs. Verizon.
This service is still unavailable in most areas. My neighboring towns dont even have it yet. Kinda strange. But by the looks of it, it seems Verizon doesn't have the full understanding of how this all works, imo. They should've just stuck with the phone service. Internet + TV is something new to them, and it looks like they have n00bs working on these things and dont have a clue what to do.
