i juss came across this and thought i'd share.. an interesting snapshot of the events from Oct. 1999 leading up to the summer of 2000. I remember that balmy summer afternoon at Nathan Philips Sq. was ram packed with over 10,000+ ppl by around 9pm. It wasn't just simply about 'raves', but the state of the Electronic Music scene here in general. I only dream that these days will someday be relived again in our great city..

iDANCE!!!!!!!!!! BAD BOY BILL played the best set in TO history @ this event, hands fucking down! When everyone pulled out the lightas, it was some sight to see. I wish they had more angles of the video.

Correction, 19,000+ strong. Watching this makes me so sad ... if I had a chance to rewind anything in my life, it would be those yrs. I really wish T.O didn't had to go through this, our scene would be just as big as Europe, maybe even bigger. Remember, the festivals over there are massive and they happen once a yr for each region ... but, we drew in 19,000+ once a month and around 8,000+ every weekend.

RIP Alan and everyone else who passed away that yr from our scene.

+1 The FIRST and real only heartfelt massive from home that I've been apart of. This made things even MORE special because it was the first real party I've been apart of...this started off my partying career so to speak. Thanks to Emery for kicking it off... Fuck man, now watching these youtube clips are just amazing and makes me feel so sad that our community has turned to shit over stupid issues, fuck, Fantino said it's not so much of a cultural issue, but the affect that drug dealers have on this cultural issue, THIS CAN BE APPLIED TO ANY CULTURE! (Fuck, I went to the ACC for a NIN concert and tried to buy a beer but some fucking asshat @ a Metallica concert caused ruckus at an earlier concert which fucked stuff up for my ability to buy beer, this is fucked up anyone's ability to take action in doing anything similar in the future. All I'm saying is precedence should NOT be set in these cases because if it is, even one time in a seemingly justifiable way then it fucks things up for situations that are TRULY justifiable... my 2c or a few dollars, I'm a bit buzzed (Jenn's bday thing)...meh....lol

Great find Emery! Glad to be reminded of iDance again.

It is a travesty that these type of parties can't be thrown in Toronto anymore. When the public consultations/hearings were going on I met with my councilor/MPP, I forwarded them information the Australian/New Zealand rave act and encouraged them to adopt something similar to the Aussie/NZ protocol.

I think much of the blame should be laid on the promoters/event organizers's moral turpitude and/or questionable business practices and less with the government being overly protectionist.

IMO - in the late 90s/early 2000 Toronto party organizers did too little, too late to ensure safety, order and reasonable care at their events. Only when it looked like they would have government interference (regulation) did they finally take the issue of safety, drugs, license, capacity, security, etc. seriously. Unfortunately by that time the event organizers/promoters were in no position to be trusted to regulate themselves.

Like any industry - if the stakeholders don't act in a responsible manner, government gets involved and fucks everything up. This is a really good example of such.

Good luck getting anything changed now. No MPP or councilor is going to propose changing any laws or regulations relating to these types of things.

IMO, party and scene atmosphere in TO then were way different than now. Inspiring video.
