Set Planning.

how do you guys normally plan a set for a Demo Set?

I have some demos out to my other dj friends but it seems my set has too many climaxes etc alot of high energy tracks.

so any tricks used in ur sets?

i start slow and build my way up....just like i do my sets when i play out....if ur a beginner dj, most likely u will be an opener, so u gotta learn to start slow so u can warm the crowd up...

youll get a million opionions on this....this is just my way...

when i am producing a mix...it always starts slow...& the last track is always the fastest...not that i'm opposed to trying somethig else..just the way i like it

i am very methodical about the mixes i produce ...they are usually 14-20 tracks long. & usually start at about 125 and end around 135-140.

before any mixing is done....i put them all in BPM order from slow to fast. then i compare about the first 2 & last 2 minutes of the songs that are next to each other to see if they will be good transitions. and switch them around so they fade better. BUT i try to keep the tracks to within at least 2-3 BPM of the ones next to them.

why:
1- like to start the mix out chill & build up faster to the end....pretty standard for DJs
2- i dont like mixing with one pitch slider at 4% and the other at 12%, for example.

depending on the style of music (more beat drviven, less melody) you can play tracks well above or below their original pitch (and BPM) without much notice (i'll accept +- 4% usually)....UNLESS THE TRACK IS VERY WELL KNOWN...in this case u do not want to mess with the pitch...just change the BPM....or you'll piss people off. especially vocal tracks obviously. .

now that i have my tracks in the order i want to mix them, i burn 2 CDs....1/2 on one 1/2 on the other. then i just mix in order from #1-7 back and forth on each deck, etc.

then i practice the set a couple times....& it becomes obvious that some tracks dont crossfade well & i re-burn them into the correct (better) order.

some more words about tempo in the sets:
dont forget that just because a track is 132bpm it doesnt mean it goes well with other 132s....because some tracks just have more energy (synth stabs, 'driving' tracks) than others...i will break my BPM rule to mix songs together that have the same 'feel'....but there is a limit...i wont go from a 128 track to a 138---just too much.
