Crapping crap crap crapsticks, my amp just died.

I'm in the middle of mixing out of a track and right during the middle of it, all of a sudden, the sound cuts out completely; I'm left hearing only the cued track. I begin to think my cat somehow messed about and unplugged something, but nope, everything was plugged in. I turn it on and off and this little red light turns on that always turned on, but all the other lights no longer do. I can only assume that the amp is entirely dead, but I plan on having my dad (previous owner of the amp) take a look at it.

Here's a picture of what it is:

A Kenwood KR-9400 vintage amp.

The bad thing is is at this current moment and into the foreseeable future, I will not have money for another amp.

Does anyone have any suggestions for an AFFORDABLE amp that will be suitable for bedroom mixing. I can't go much more over $400 I don't think unless I'm really pressing it.

well you have two options.

1. Get an amp and not pay for it.

2. Use someone elses money to buy an amp.

Would a cheap 100$ Sony mini-system not do the task until more funds were available?

A QSC RMX 1450 or 850. I had an 850, noisey as hell but it was pretty reliable for the most part. The 1450 is around $399 - $450, and the 850 is $299 - $350.

An American Audio V1000 or 2000 plus should work okay. The V1000 is $299 and the V2000 is $399.

A Yamaha P2500S Dual Channel Power Amp should also work. It's $399.

Behringer has a few, decent amps like the EuroPower EP1500 or 2500. The EP1500 is $299, and the EP2500 is $349.

You could see about getting any of these less, I am sure you can find a used/refurbished one for less. I'm just basing the prices off of their initial price on MusiciansFriend.com, probably the same on PSSL.com. QSC makes the best ones IMO. The cheaper ones are quite loud, but you have to pay almost $1000 for a really quiet one...

Gotta love those old school amps. I use an old vintage Denon with analog meters... I love the hell out of it.

Thanks for the suggestions, the Yamaha one looks rather sharp and confined.

As for this amp, I absolutely loved it. Nice, clean, powerful sound and it worked like a champ while it actually, you know, worked. Who knows, maybe my dad will want to take it some place and get it repaired. If that's the case then I'll be more than willing to help pay for some of the repairs, hell, maybe all of the repairs depending on how cheap it'd be. I've grown quite attached to it; I was so sad to see and hear it die

Don't even think about spending $400 on an amp if you're on a budget.

Check craigslist... I found my beautiful Sony amp for $60. Why buy new when used will do?

Yeah but you should make sure that the amp doesn't crap out eventually like Demoted's one did. I got a used QSC 850 (for $200) that worked fine, but I would be suspicious of paying $60 for an amp unless it's either really old or poorly made. Sometimes paying a little extra for something that you know is in good shape..is better than going on the cheap for something just because your on a budget. If $400 is his budget, there's lots of decent amps for $200 - $400.

I have been really happy with my AudioSource AMP One/A (http://www.audiosource.net/2005/amponea.html). Passive cooling so no fan to make noise, plenty of clean power from the torrodial power supply. I assume you are not running big PA speakers from looking at your old amp.

Should be easy to find one new for under $200.

IMO most of the pro audio amps are simply too noisy (bad fan noise, not good music noise) for the normal bedroom setup. The AudioSource amp should have enough power to get really loud if you have even halfway efficient speakers. Another plus is the small profile of this amp, I tuck mine in the "keyboard" tray of the desk my tables/speakers are on.
