Backpacking Central/South America

any of you guys ever go on an adventure somewhere central or south america? i got $1000CAD and 10 days, want to take off in late april.

I'm having trouble deciding where to go, i've researched quite a few places but the more i research, the more I know about the place and the less mysterious and interesting it is. From what I've read, central and south america are pretty much THE #1 hotspot for Americans and Canadians, making the places very touristy which i do not like. I'm sure in one of those places, there ARE something to see and experience that has not been affected by globalization. I want to experience a little bit of culture, lifestyle, food, and fun.

Any place (country, city, or even 1 area) you guys can suggest for me?

this is my first time travelling alone (aka no family) with a buddy, so it should be interested either way.

I was in Brazil last Feb for 3weeks... it's an amazing place, with great culture and people. I was in Rio for Carnival, a secluded island south of Rio and went to the Southern tip near Argentina to the Falls. There are numerous jungle tours if that's what you want to do. My friend toured more of S Amer as he was on a 8+ month world tour starting there.

Safety is a big issue... I was about 2 meters away from a guy who was being shot at in the best part of Rio in mid-afternoon. But other than that nothing happened compared to some stories I heard. But then again people thought I was a local.

What are your interests specifically - I can ask my friend for his recommendations. I also have friend in Rio who travel there quite frequently and can ask them.
