What's in a name?

Have you noticed how Dj's that call themselves 'DJ Buzz' or 'DJ Kool' or whatever never seem to do very well. Its almost like damaging your own reputation giving yourself a stupid name like that, because people don't take you seriously.

E.g look at the top 100 list, how many Dj's actually use the DJ prefix before their name - not many at all. Tiesto dropped the DJ part from his name ages ago.

So why do so many dj's still choose to call themselves stupid names?

Oh how glorious it was back before trance was pretentious. Now its as much about the image as it is about the music. Take me to a rave in 1992.

Anyone with "Buzz" or "Cool" is in their performing name is bound to be taken a little less seriously amongst people who actually know a thing or two abot EDM...however in America many people can only identify their favorite djs if the word "DJ" is actually in the name. Most people who are uneducated about EDM will likely remember "Dj Irene" or "Dj Skribble" a lot more than Desyn Masiello or Troy Pierce. The fact is, some of the djs pick these names because it might be easy to get their name out there more..

Idiot Raver 1: "Yo last weekened was insane!!! This one rave I went to had all these kick ass djs playing Techno music!!"
Idiot Raver 2: "AWesome! like WHO?"
Idiot Raver 1: "uuuuh...this one guy, john digsomething...i dunno...oh yeah, DJ SKRIBBLE and DJ SCRATCH and DJ EZWEEZEE"
Idiot Raver 2: "Sweet! Let's go there again"

It has a lot more to do with marketing their name than anything else. But, it's no coincidence why those djs are not internationally known or cared about. Other than Dj Shadow, he's a definite exception

So much for that theory.

I think most people do it for the alter ego effect.

Billy Jamison by day
DJ BJ by night

then I think as the DJ matures and gets better at what he does, he can drop that ego and show the world his real name and who he is.

he or she.

I remember some dj name changes when I was partying in SF
DJ D changed to Denise
DJ RKTECH changed to Ron Rieser

I think it also works the other way around. Using your real name shows you're just a guy who's there to play some music - no pretentious alter egos, no pop star image, no DJ worship. Putting "DJ" in front just implies you think you're important enough to have some special title.

I'm reading off a flyer for some Chicago-area DJs and they have some pretty interesting names
- DJ Chloroform
- DJ Xposur
- DJ Bang It
- DJ Bam Bam
- DJ Skeptyk
- DJ Exturnal

They work for the euro scene and make their names memorable, they just sound pretty lame and I could do without the misspelling
