John Wayne in "The Green Berets" 1968

Like cheese with your propaganda? If so, this is the perfect flick for you.

What do the critics have to say?

N.Y. TIMES REVIEW
By RENATA ADLER
Published: June 20, 1968
"THE GREEN BERETS is a film so unspeakable, so stupid, so rotten and false in every detail that it passes through being fun, through being funny, through being camp, through everything and becomes an invitation to grieve, not for our soldiers or for Vietnam (the film could not be more false or do a greater disservice to either of them) but for what has happened to the fantasy-making apparatus in this country."

Reviewed by Dennis Schwartz
"The first film about the Vietnam War is John Wayne's hawkish government propaganda film, a salute to the Special Forces, that uncritically accepts the cause for the war and lashes out at its opponents for even raising questions about its justification. It's a crude film in every which way, from the lame acting to the uninteresting narrative to its overlong length." http://www.sover.net/~ozus/greenberets.htm

Steve Crum - Kansas City Kansan
"When I first saw this at an NCO club during the Vietnam War, Army vets laughed and catcalled throughout the film because of the preposterous dialogue and action sequences."

Here's a wedge:

Damn! That's stinky cheese!

I remember being impressed with one battle scene where every time a US soldier was hit someone would holla MEDIC!, and in about 5 seconds two d00ds with a stretcher would bounce into the scene and whisk the wounded man to safety.

There's the irreverent Sergent who doesn't really follow orders very well, but his commanding officers eat it up. Yeah, right.

Oh, and the best part of the movie are the scenes where 220 lb white stuntmen play Vietcong. They wear blackface like Al fucking Jolson and try to cover their faces with hats when possible. Some of them are overweight.

The list goes on and on.

I someday hope to watch all the major Vietnam movies, one per night, from most recent through the first (which is this crapfest).

Wait, you don't mean it's "good" good do you? It's "good" bad right?
