Question on mp3 technical

hi there

i was just wondering if i buy and audio cd from a shop, i them encode it to mp3 at 320kbps with lame, can i then convert the mp3 back to wav/audio without loosing any quality or is soon as convert to mp3 then its stays at that quality....

does this go any format can you swap back and forth without loosing quality as long as you start with audio cd

you cant convert mp3 to wav its impossible to gain quality

Think of it as copying a DVD to a VHS tape, and then copying the VHS tape back to DVD. You can do it, but the original quality is lost forever.

That said, 320kbps is pretty darn good quality, between which you probably won't notice a difference.

yea when things are lost, they cannot magically reappear. so when you lose that information when you convert to mp3, you cannot magically make it reappear.

mp3 is a lossy codec, eg. you lose some of the original information (signal).

Lossless audio codecs exist; if you wanted to convert a CD to a digital format (to play on a computer or whatnot), you could always rip it using a lossless codec, thereby preserving the original quality.
