First CDJ mix - opinions please

hi guys

this is the first mix ive recorded on my CDJ 800's, had the pair for 2 weeks

been using traktor (so no need to beatmatch) since last june, so beatmatching is the biggest step at the moment (as you'll see)

dont expect anything great i just want opinions on EQing, track selection etc, the beatmatching should just get better with time

ive never touched vinyl so the CDJs are my first jump into the proper DJ world (will be adding vinyl soon though)

heres the tracklist:

Mark Pledger - On The Edge
Signalrunners - Aria Epica (Bart Claessen Mix)
Lost World - A Life Elsewhere
Smith & Pledger - White
Selu Vibra - Divine
Stoneface & Terminal - Super Nature
Miguel Sassot - Empty (Aly & Fila Mix)

heres the link:

any opinions good or bad please bearing in mind i havent been doing this long

1st: You brought it in too fast, cue up much better aswell they wernt in time at all. Take aslong as you need while the 1st track is playing to make sure they are in time with each other.

2nd: Same again really, you need to nail the beatmatching before your mixing 2 tracks, theres no need to make big adjustments if you get it right.

Forget EQ'ing until you can beatmatch solidly. Your selection is quite good though but it will mean nothing if you cant beatmatch.

It does get slightly better, but I dont know why things are slipping so much, and if they are, mix out faster or re-adjust much quicker.

Its a huge learning cruve, practice makes perfect, so good luck with it.

im not gonna mix them with no EQ, no fun that way i think my problem is dropping the incoming track at the right point

the first 2 mixes are the worst i agree, i think i over-adjust when correcting, hopefully it'll all come with time (i can get them more solidly in sync now that i could when i recorded the mix, so im getting somewhere)

when i beatmatch i:

- set the cue point
- wait til the first beat of a bar in the playing track and play track 2
- slow down or speed up the tune as needed a rough amount with the pitch shifter
- spin the edges of the jog wheel so slow it down, if it gets in time then adjust with pitch slider
- repeat til beatmatched
(or the other way round for speeding up of course)

is that the most efficient way?

jumping from PC to CDJ hasnt been easy, it seems cueing and beatmatching are just getting the way of everything else at the moment

Yeah that sounds about right, but if your doing it right then it shouldnt be shifting like it seems too, do it, but listen to it for another 5-10secs to make sure it sticks. Then when your in time, wait for your point to start mixing in your second track, play, make sure they are in time, THEN start to fade in gradually.. thats the simplest way and usually works best for trance, which imo should flow in such a manner

Its all about experimenting though, listen to other mixes of top DJs on here see how and where they mix, then try it out yourself.

Kudos on the great advice, nice to see some people still wanting others to learn properly and help them along. Ace!
