Question Baldur's Gate II vs. Icewind Dale?

i am planning to buy one of them but which one?

Baldur's Gate II (with Throne of Bhaal) or
Icewind Dale (with Heart of Winter) ?

don't bother telling me about ID 2 (i know), just tell me which of these two is better in YOUR opinion. The price is the same for both. Neverwinter Nights is going to rock but i am still buying one of these. Thanx for your help

Icewind Dale is pure dungeon crawling with little story. The Baldur's Gate series has a complex story line with tons of variation and side quests and whatnot. The key IMO is getting Baldur's Gate 1, becoming familiar with the game at a low level and building up your personal character to export him into Baldur's Gate 2 and carry on his legacy. Icewind Dale is an intricate Diablo, the Baldur's Gate series is just intricate.

I've played through Baldur's Gate 1 with a power character in the past, but now I've reinstalled the game and plan on cultivating my thief into the Assassin i'm going to kit him to in BG2. Then when Never Winters Nights comses out you should be able to export your Bg2 character into that game. I also plan on playing through IWD after I'm done with the Baldur's Gate series and expansions, tho that will be in quite some time as I haven't even started my character in BG1 yet. CS takes up all of my gaming time at the moment.

I'd definately go for BG2. IWD was great but it lacks a deep story and replayability. It's short too (expecially the expansion pack). BG2 on the other hand is easily one of the greatest RPGs of all time. It has an amzaing story, great presentation, replayability, customizability, and so forth. Get BG2!

'cause of the new 3rd edition D&D rules implementation, we won't be able to import our old BG chars into NWN

They both are GREAT games. If you're more into the rpg/adventure side (like me ) go for BG, if you're more into the combat/crawling side go for IWD.
Keep in mind those are BIG articulate addictive games that will suck ALL your free time if you want to finish them in a reasonable time

There's a very good site with all your possible infos or answers

oh, that's right, I completely forgot about that. that sucks. heh, when the NWN site first went up (over a year ago) , they announced in the features section that you would be able to export your IWD and BG2 characters into the game, but they are going to go with the new rules so I guess that's obsolete....unless they find a way to convert the characters but I doubt it.

Regardless, NWN is going to be a phenomenal game but I can wait seeing as how I still have the BG series , Pools Of Radiance (any good?) and Fallout Tactics to go through (if I ever get sick of CS).

I've just finished Pool of Radiance and well, it's good, not outstanding (not comparable with BG saga). It implements half of the new 3rd ed D&D rules (usefull to make a sorta acquaintance with'em ). It's pure turn based (like Fallout) and it's a REAL dungeon crawling game (can get borin sometimes). Anyway worth a try

yuck, I don't mind turn-based for the Fallout series, the wickedness of the game makes up for it, but a dungeon crawling game that's turned based? sounds a bit tedious, going to put that one on the back burner for now, thanks.

good choice and luck.

ps. did anyone else try to get through the game without your main character dying once..... i used to be a madman trying to accomplish that, but it's impossible.... even if you know the game inside and out, always something that surprises you.
