A battle mixer is a two channel mixer. The three more popular are the Rane TTM56, Rane TTM57 and the Vestax 05 Pro. Oh, Pioneer also make the Pioneer DJM909 and the DJM400.

The battle mixer usually features smooth faders, and the layouts are so clean that nothing gets on the way. Battle mixers usually let you adjust the fader's curve.

OK - so why might you use a battle mixer rather than 'another' mixer - purely for scratching?

If you only are going to be using 2 channels, I don't think it matters what type of mixer you buy. Battle is just the layout style, as mentioned before, its a more open layout.

Battle mixers ment for scratching. That's why the faders are super smooth and they don't have anything get on their way.

you could use a battle mixer for conventional electronic music mixing but there are less options available to you.

on the subject of the crossfader if the curve isn't adjustable it will usually a very steep cut at the end of the crossfader range. The average dj scratches like the crabe require a lot of extremely fast cuts hence the steep curve.


some electronic djs never use the crossfader so this doesn't matter

for some time the only mixer i had access to was a shitty stanton sk 6f battle mixer

suffice to say i was mixing with the gain knobs because the faders were so uncontrollably steep.

i wouldn't call them so much smooth faders as, just about to fall off faders.

definitely want to use another mixer unless you're battle mixing/scratching/beatjuggling

I have DJM909 "battle mixer"





The front panel has a series of switches & knobs where the crossfader & upfaders can be adjusted, lag adjusted etc:



The tension of the non contact optical crossfader can also be adjusted to your own preference:



Along with a whole host of FX, one of the menu pages within the touch sensitive screen allows further adjustments to be made, eg the fader curves can be adjusted independantly:


The faders can be reversed too (ie move them in downwards direction to increase volume of the track).

It's all geared towards scratchers & beat jugglers. You might have noticed the foot pedal jack on the front of the unit? FX etc can be controlled via an optional foot pedal which frees up the hands to do other things ...like a Jesus pose

I just spin trance so not too much of it is relevant to me - I dont even use the crossfader So why have I got one? I wanted some FX & spotted one of these beasts on eBay at a great price Don't let the tag battle mixer put you off - it performs brilliantly as a "standard" DJ mixer.
