Much of the cost of bringing in out-of-area talent is the transportation costs. These costs are almost always included in your fee and done in advance. Don't let a promoter con you into paying your own way to the gig. Because more often than not, the promoter will try to save some loot and stick you with the cost. If you're not asking for a transportation fee, then ask for an forward deposit. This ensures that you're not only get to paid (at least something) but gets you there as well without paying out of pocket.
