I knew a local place that needed a DJ so i sent them a tape and after that i just haggled them and haggled them, until they said do an hour 1 FRIDAY NITE just after the dj they had there who was filling in for a bit from a DJ AGENCY (they were paying the agency a fortune) and they liked my mixing and tunes so they gave me a full slot!

I had a friend who was a good friend of a club promoter. I got the guy's name and number and gave him a call. He was actually quite a nice guy, though kinda flaky. We talked music a bit and he mentioned he'd be in my neighborhood later that day and offered to stop by to pick up some demo CDs. About 2 weeks later I had a message from him that the club's resident Saturday night DJ quit and he wanted me to play that following Saturday. I was turning cartwheels for the rest of the week. I had a great night and he asked me back the next Saturday. He already had out of town guest DJs booked for the next two Saturdays. Unfortunately (unbeknownst to me) there was some ongoing minor conflict between him and the management, and he ended up leaving. This particular club then decided to reinvent itself on Saturday nights (and is still trying two years later).

It was a great experience, and aside from the experience of playing live, I got a BIG education in the complex dynamics of getting a gig and dealing with the politics.

It definitely opened some doors too. Still have to work my day job though...

i am like member of dndj... its like "the norwegian dj club" or something.. they have like sometimes a club that they arrange that amateur dj´s get to play... i played a set from 5 past 12 and to 5 to 1... it was wicked... there were like alot of guys sitting cus the guy b4 me, thougt he was like lisa lashes lost brother, and played only 150 ++ bpm hardhouse.. it was kewl, but it was a little 2 much..
then i came on.. i cued up my track, and then faded out his, and when it was almost down, i slammed on my track... some more ppl started dancing (i was playing 140 bpm house/hardhouse) and my next track was "adrenaline - shut the fuck up and dance"- and when the vocals when "all you guys standing around talking... SHUT THE FUCK UP AND DANCE" everybody was on the floor... goddamn wicked

In High School the student board was conducting a school dance and they were looking for a DJ(s) my friend and I got signed on and that was it. I was playing House and some back in the day Techno lol. No one knew what the hell fast Techno was lol
