how is this (FM) sound made?

I just listened again to The Poisonous Square by Derango, one of my favorite Psytunes ever. It has this mind grinding FM sound in some parts. I've tried to recreate this sound for eternity, and even though I have some experience with FM synthesis, I never got even close.

Here is a sample:

Its that sharp lead thats in the foreground.
Obviously, this has a flanger/phaser with high feedback on it, and its most likely made with FM synthesis, thats all I know... Are some experts on FM synthesis here that can help me on this one? What is modulated here to give it that kind of morphing character?

i dunno if this will help you at all, but i kinda was messing around the other day and kinda made a similar sound i think.

all this is was i took a hihat...zoomed in and made a bunch of very short instances together, but on a scale of notes...and some real basic reverb and phaser...

i'm sure there is a synth way to do what you want, but your sample just kinda reminded me of this.

Interesting attempt, Floorfiller. It's coming pretty close, but I think that morphing character this one got must be achieved with a synth.

Sounds like it's got a formant filter of some sort in there as well, somewhere on the chain. As far as the FM itself, it doesn't sound too nonstandard IMO.

I think I got it. It has not got as much depth as the original, but I've come closer than ever.

FM Synth is just a fast sawtooth modulated by a slower sawtooth.
Highpass filter on it, 2 flangers, EQ and some delay.

Thanks all for trying to help.

Are you using positive or negative feedback on the flanger? I know that negative gives that 'depth' to the sound, similar to the one in the track you posted.

I'm using Linplug Albino 3. I'm not a huge fan of the complex pure FM synths, theyre honestly too complicated to me. Most of the time I just need one oscillator modulated by another one anyway.
