China Raises Annual Concerns about Human Rights in the US

China on Thursday published a report lambasting the United States for trampling on human rights in a response to harsh criticism of its human rights record issued by the Department of State on Tuesday.
In its report, the U.S. State Department said China’s poor human rights record deteriorated further last year with officials arresting reporters, activists and lawyers. It also faulted China for rampant corruption and government control of courts and judges.

China has been responding to the State Department’s annual human rights records for eight years with its own reports. But this year’s record got extra publicity with a wide coverage on the Chinese television and in the Xinhua news agency.

China fired back saying that the United States itself has a poor human rights records with discriminations against racial minorities and women, war crimes and manipulating mass media.

“As in previous years, the State Department pointed the finger at human rights conditions in more than 190 countries and regions, including China, but avoided touching on the human rights situation in the United States,” the report said.

Washington has not as yet reacted to the publication.

China rejects U.S. criticism on human rights

BEIJING, March 7 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday voiced strong dissatisfaction and opposition to the U.S. State Department's 2006 Human Rights Report that criticizes China's human rights conditions.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang made the remarks in response to a question concerning the U.S. State Department's Report on Human Rights Practices for 2006 issued Tuesday, which said China's human rights record deteriorated in some areas in 2006.

Qin said the U.S. annual report "again ignored basic facts," and willfully distorted and groundlessly criticized China's human rights situation.

Based on the human rights provisions of the Constitution, the Chinese government at all levels has been making constant efforts to expand democracy and advance judiciary reform so as to realize the comprehensive development of its people, Qin said.

China has made remarkable achievements in human rights protection, and the Chinese people enjoy full human rights and freedom according to law, he said.

"The U.S. government has no right to depict itself as a human rights watchdog, a view that is generally agreed by public opinion of the international community," Qin said.

"We suggest the U.S. should reflect on its own human rights problems, and stop interfering in the internal affairs of other countries on the pretext of human rights," said the spokesman.

China rejects U.S. criticism on human rights

A brilliant saying.
