Distortion from monitors when usb interface is connected

I just bought an Edirol UA-1EX to output sound from my mixer so I can record on my laptop. I have my monitors hooked up to one of the master outs on my mixer, but as soon as I plug in the RCAs from the second master out to the Edirol's input, a distortion sound comes from the monitors, even when the mixer is turned off.

Does anyone know what I need to change to fix this? Sorry if it's been posted before, I tried searching and found nothing.

You might need a ground loop isolator which can be found at Radioshack for 16 bucks. I needed one for use with Torq. Cuts out all the interference.

I had the same problem with every soundcard iv had, but now iv got Serato and the box has some kind of filter built in.
Beware of cheap isolators though, they can add other weird noises.

I actually found that if I just run my laptop off battery instead of power cord, the sound goes away. I just can't record any sets longer than a couple hours

Yeah man. Same thing happened to me. You need the ground loop isolator for sure. Then you can plug in for as long as you want.

many radioshacks don't carry the ground loop isolators...if you can't find it there, just to an car audio installation place. They will have it there

It's noise from the (crappy) powersupply that came with your laptop. It's a common problem that pops up on here basically once a week or so

Because the noise is being generated inside your computer, it isn't really a ground loop. Hence, ground loop isolators usually don't fix the problem. ALSO, ground loop isolators are dirty, they colour the sound, I don't like them!

There are two ways you can go really... The best option is to buy a really high quality generic powersupply. If you can, go to a laptop parts shop and see if you can test a bunch of them. The other option is to use a DI box with a ground lift switch. Again, I don't really like doing that because it has the potential to alter the sound. If you choose to do the later option, make sure you get a good quality one, NOT BEHRINGER
