why is it that...

djs can't play more of their own music and mixes when they perform live?

why play 4 of your tracks out of a set of 20? forgive me if this was already posted!

edit: i mean why don't the majority of djs not play more of their own tracks in their set lists?

They do (See: Gabriel & Dresden) - and no one is stopping anyone from doing so if they choose.

That depends on who's playing?
Some Dj's play 20/20 of their own stuff and some dont play anything of their own..
So it all comes down to who's playing..
16Bit Lolitas, Trentemoller, Radio Slave etc.. play 19/20 own stuff

Have you ever heard a set of theirs? They play a fair number of their own productions, but no where near as many as you think.

I'm not sure I have ever heard a popular and established producer play a DJ set that didn't include one or more of his own tracks.

I think she just worded this wrong. Anyways, there are plenty of djs that play many of their own tracks in their sets:

Ferry Corsten
Marco V
Sean Tyas
16 Bit Lolitas
Trentemoller (though he doesn't really dj per sé)
Gabriel & Dresden

The reason why it's not such a good idea is because generally if a dj has an entire set compiled of their own tracks, it means that not all of those tracks are really any good. Many of them tend to be quickly-produced fillers. This isn't true in all cases, but it does tend to happen.

yeah, that's true it depends on who's playing.

and yes, 16 bit lolitas seem to play more of their stuff.

i've seen some set lists where the dj played NOTHING of theirs. it shouldn't matter if yu haven't had a song out in a whie, i don't think they should not play more of their own stuff. hello? i came there to see a live show with more of YOUR music and your presence. i understand you have to play tracks that are various, but to play 3 or 4 out of 20 or 25 seems odd.

Not every DJ is a producer, and not every producer is all that great of a DJ.

Sets that are made up primarily of the performers productions almost always seem bland and uninteresting to me.

I go to clubs to hear good music, it certainly doesn't matter whom it was created by as long as I'm enjoying it.

So you're saying you want a dj to play mostly only their own stuff? I'd have to disagree mainly based on my point listed above as well as a few others. Namely, you can go to see a dj based on the tracks that they find and play. Not necessarily their own, but the ones that they find of others that no one else seems to play, then how they work it into their set perfectly. You can see a dj based on the mood and flow they create, not just the shit that they've produced (and sometimes half-assed at that).

dj does not equal production. Going to see a dj for their productions is like liking a chef because they grow their own crops and not because they cook well.
