British Political Poll

Hi! I've already posted on this topic before but would be interested to see the results of a poll. There isn't a law in Britain to prosecute politicians who deceive the public. Consequently, the only time at which politicians are held accountable for their actions is during the general elections...these are few and far between and so I believe that there ought to be a law in place designed to hold them accountable when they tell porkies. Any Thoughts?

Hard debate to have as in my opinion all politicans are untruthful to some extent. It makes me laugh how Labour slated the tories before they came into power about being liars when their just as bad if not worse.

I think their should have some kind of guidelines put into place, with and the politicians get fined if they step over these guidelines. Loss of funds will lead to the cabinet and more senior politicians watching their MP's more closely.

Tell me more about this law. Do you have any details or links that we could read? I've heard of something about this from another source a few years back but didn't follow up on it.

There is an Impeachment law which dates back to around the time of King James I (actually I think his son Charles got done for it as well!) which the US based theirs off but it's not really been used on anyone in government for more or less the same length of time. They tend to get nailed with Treason usually back then.

Don't really know where you'd find the current UK law.

Take a look at the following quotes:

“Mine is the first generation able to contemplate the possibility that we may live our entire lives without going to war or sending our children to war.”

the Rt. Hon. Tony Blair MP
NATO-Russia Summit, May 27, 1997

"People want honest politics and they are going to get it."

the Rt. HonTony Blair MP
1997 Election Campaign

..yeah, right.

I think there should be a law in place (obviously!)and I have a specific law in mind which I found on a really interesting site a few weeks back. The site is called The Ministry of Truth :
http://mo-truth.blogspot.com/

They have created a law called the 'Misrepresentation of the People act' designed to prosecute politicians who deceive the public and they are currently trying to find an MP who'll help them get it passed through parliament. Here's the act itself:

http://mo-truth.blogspot.com/2007/0...e-act-mk-2.html

Have a read through the site if you have time - lots of information and funny quotes. Unfortunately they appear to be on holiday at the minute though!
