Ghost Smilie Doin a thesis

Hey everyone,
I have just signed up to this site to get some information on trance and techno music. I love it so much that ive decided to do my final year thesis on it. if anyone out there can give me more websites to look up or books that give me definitions of trance and techno music it would b excellent. I always get these mixed up adn even musical examples of the difference between these genres would also help loads.
Cheers

honestly, why would you base your academic thesis, the crux of your academic career, on something you don't know the first thing about?

why don't you look at the marketing aspect of trance music and the sound that actually is on the record/cd and do a comparative study.

trace the discrepancy between marketing and music over the years.

for instance, there were turning somewhere where 'trance' became uncool as descriptors for djs/compilations/labels/tracks, there were points of inflection in the marketing curve where techno began to shift mass meaning, or when meanings diverged, etc. You could even diagram the semantics and the connotative history of words used to market or describe dance music from 1990 to present

it should be easy to talk about marketing and musically look at things like structure, production aesthetic, instruments, length, etc

I'm sure you could reach some kind of important conclusion that way

and i'd like to read it

right, you could possibly borrow definitions from people like derrick may, kevin saunderson, dr motte, laurent garnier, mark reeder which are found in numerous documentaries.

see the problem is what are you trying to define?

because defining genre is a route to faliure 99% of the time, since genres by their very nature are fluid and change over time.

ask a 16 yearold ASOT fan from minnesota what trance is and you'll get a very different answer than laurent garnier.

Considering this is your thesis, I would probably approach it more seriously.
