"disk boot error , please insert system disk"

Hey guys, so today i replaced my old hard drive, with a new western digital hard drive, because my old one crapped out, and when i restart my computer, i get "disk boot error, please insert system disk", and i tried putting in my windows xp cd, but i would still get the same message, and another strange thing is that, i cant even access my bios.

Anybody have any suggestions. Thanks.

System Specs

P4 1.7ghz
512mb ram
80gb Hard Drive (new)

Do you get access to your BIOS with the old hard drive inserted?

yea, but the whole reason i replaced hard drives, was because i started to get the same message with the old hard drive.

Strange, I can't really put my finger on what it could be then.. On the one hand it could be your BIOS, on the other your HD might be faulty. Or the connector, even. The last two options don't explain why you can't enter your BIOS, though.

Ever tried flashing the BIOS, or replacing the battery on your mainboard? Note that is is pretty much an 'if all else fails' option.. Plus, when flashing you BIOS, you might fuck up your PC royally.

well i know that the new hard drive is working fine, because i put it into an external case, and i formatted and it worked fine, but what really kills me is the fact that i can even access the bios.

Can or can't?

I'll try and find some time to look around for an answer.. Can't promise anything though.

Check your jumper settings on the WD hard drive. They are very picky about that. If you only have the one WD hard drive on an IDE channel with no other device, you must set the jumper to "Single". If you have another device on an IDE channel with the WD hard drive, you can set the jumper on the WD hard drive to "Master" and the other device to "Slave". If you're not using an IDE hard drive, then ignore this.

Have you tried accessing the bios with the hard drives disconnected? If you can, you need to set it to boot the the CD drive first and the hard drive second.
