a question about tt

My tt is making that really loud bassy noise when the ground wire is not connected correctly. I can see the break, and the part going into the tt is so fucking small and frayed I can barely get to it. I was thinking of using electrical tape to seal the two pieces together, but does the cord connected directly to the tt have any slack to pull on? What part would I have to take off to do this? Please help me...I miss music.
