Networking help!!!

For all you networking experts out there

I'm trying to set up a home network between my desktop computer and my laptop. I have a DSL internet connection on my desktop. I have one network card in my desktop for the internet and another for the network. That one and my laptop's card are connected directly with a Cat5 crossover cable. Accessing the files on one computer from the other is not a problem, but I'm running into a problem when trying to access the internet from my laptop. I've tried changing all sorts of settings, but nothing seems to be working. I'm running XP on my laptop and 98SE on my desktop. Any suggestions as to what to do???

Well i have shared a connection between Win ME and 98. Actually no there were both ME, but nevermind, i think xp has something on it will let you share your connection, but i am not sure about 98. I know that is is fairly simple in ME, but xp runs on NT technology so should be very easy to share the connection. Have you looked for something in network neighbourhood.

Ok i have had a look at ME, you should have a network wizard, there should be a setting in there to allow one computer to share the connection with another. It shouldnt be to hard to setup

The whole process seemed relatively easy... but my internet connection just can't be shared for some reason... I believe it has something to do with it being PPPoE-based but I'm not sure...

well,
I am not sure if Win98SE has the micro$oft internet sharing thingy, since i haven't used that piece of $heite in like 3 years, but i know that there is software that will easily let you do what you want to do.

maybe you should look
HERE first, they have a ton of info..

otherwise

try winroute the light version might be free (not sure)

then there is Wingate which works a little differently

98se does not support sharing... especially not with XP since theyre two relatively different platforms..

like what was said above, you need to get a third party program to hook that up...

winroute or all aboard are two...

Actually you can setup 98 to share a internet connection thru XP. It isnt real hard but probally more effort then going out and getting winrouteetc.

ok i was wrong earlier, i figured da_MynDLesS_one would check my first link..

from http://www.practicallynetworked.com:

quote:
Before you can install ICS, you first need to install Win98 SE, because ICS is part of the operating system.

NOTE! You need to install Win SE only on the computer that you want to install ICS on. The other computers on your network do not need to be upgraded to Win98 SE, and can run on any operating system, as long as it supports the TCP/IP protocol.

see ICS is with Win98SE (I did not know, since I did not really care, as I said before, I do not sure that PoS anymore) so you can now go to that webpage and read how it is done.. good night

ps.:
no it has nothing to do with PPPoE or being ethernet based... provided you have the right software:

^^^^^^^^ see you can even choose cable/ dsl as your outgoing (www) connection

Depends if you want to use the computers at the same time or separately. If at the same time you are going to need server software like Sygate (i use that to share four connections for the price of one).

I take it you are sat behind a firewall as well. Thi might be a problem. There maybe a setting in there. But if my school can network and share the connection i am sure we can over 98 and XP.

But that 3rd party way sounds most promersing
