Atm, I'm using FL7. I can't even go about creating a new track since I get so much crackling noise which I assume is due to the CPU usage. How can I go about reducing the CPU usage so it does not distort my music while I create it?

Edit: I installed an external HD to empty out things that take up a load of space on my comp. but that didn't seem to work.

If anything, moving files to an external drive will slow things down if they're frequently-used files, because external access times are slower.

If you have a dual/multi core processor enable multi thread processing.

Enable smart disable.

Increase your latency slightly to lose crackles

Make sure your are running ASIO, it is the only way nowadays

Here's the 2 things that will help you out:
1) Bounce synths to audio and freeze them
2) Use more send effects instead of inserts

Wot do u guys use to individually eq each track in the fruity mixer? I have been using the Waves plugins as inserts and am finding that they are pretty heavy on the CPU'ometer. Can anybody suggest a good substitue that isn't so cpu heavy, but that is also accurate (ie. Not the built in one or Fruity 7 band eq).

Hi Pailc_dj.

I also use Waves plugins, and i know there a bit of cpu eaters. I use them to individually tweak the sounds. However, when you are done you should freeze the track or bounce it to wav. If it is already a wav, bounce it to a new wav. Thants what i do! Then you should (as mentioned above) try to have as many sounds as possible controlled via send tracks.

Nice one Substorm, I already knew about bouncing to audio tho. Just wondered if there was anything thats good for accurate LP/HP and not too heavy on the cpu, so that I can keep it live. Also I have a very simple question. If I toggle off the VST that I have just rendered to audio, does that take it out of the equation or am I best off using FX freeze?

For EQ I use ElectriQ. It has an economy mode which makes it run with practically zero CPU overhead.

BTW, it's the best EQ ever ;P

Not really shure of what you mean. However, i do like this that i have my vst and then the eq, comp or whatever. Then i freeze it, and if i like it as it is i bounce it to wav. Or you can bounce it to wav then ad the fx, and then when you think you got what you want, freeze the audio track with the fx and then bounce it to its final. The second option is good if you have many vst´s running.

Here's tip - many people might already know it : an oldie but definately a goodie!!!

I am still using a AMD athlon k7 1.4ghz(not even athlon XP!) computer that I bought in 2001 and apart from having to format the system drive when it gets a bit sluggish and clogged once a year, I run programs (Neuendo 3 etc. various new plugins) that have minimum system reqs much higher than my system.

There are a set of step by step instructions with explanations of the tweaks, and I can assure you none of them have buggered my computer. Some will disable thisngs like remote access so make sureyou read the explanations before doing them.

Also, bring up task manager and look at the amount of processes you have running. things like itunes, bit torrnet clients and video card software will run background tasks when idle/or not even being used so switch them off. I have found though that switching off explorer has negative effects sometimes but it's all about what will suit your system.

Go to the processes (task manager > processes > right click) of programs that you are using and set their priority to high. I have found system instability when set to realtime as my processor just can't cope. Experiment with this to find out what works best for your set up.

music xp tips combined with processes optimisiing will let you get the most out of music programs.

One last thing, sounds really obvious, but if latency is not an issue and your having problems playing you track because of stuttering audio (i.e. listening back to a track or have bounced down all your midid taracks etc.) set you soundcard buffer (in samples) to a higher number. it's only a temporary fix but can let you at least get some work done.
