Home FTP Server Software?

I'm planning on setting up a home ftp server for a few people. I have an old computer that I will probably use. I am getting confused by all the ftp software available. Any recommendations?
-Cute FTP
-Filezilla
-Smart FTP
-Others???

Requirements:
-Have multiple root directories. Meaning share multiple folders, including a 'network drive'.
-User names and passwords
-Security stuffs

Also, what sort of security should one be concerned about if one were sharing media files mostly. Should one use sftp (secure ftp), or is that overkill? Would user names and passwords with no anonymous logging be ok?

what OS are you using? If you are using 2000/2003 Server or WinXPPro, you can use IIS and FTP Publishing, and manage users through Active Directory. I use IIS for light FTP transferring when i need to transfer something from one computer to another computer.

I have XP Pro. I don't know too much about the software you listed, but I think it would be easier for me to use one of the traditional ftp clients. I will look into your suggestions.

The weakest link in security is the user most of the time. Know who you're going to give access to your FTP server, and be sure they handle their passwords with care.

If you want to make sure your connections are secure, use an sftp server. I used freeFTPd for a while, it's freeware, pretty easy to use but very basic and it had some tech issues (could be the PC I was running it on as well though). I'm sure there are freeware alternatives out there, but I never really looked into those.

The alternative LeopoldStotch brought up would work well, but apart from the OS requirement you'd need to know a bit about IIS and AD as well.

Oh, and unless you're brutally violating your bandwidth quota, don't worry about people looking into what you're actually sending / receiving..

yeah i agree with the other sourceware ftp software out there. i have used sftp, and it works pretty fine, in my opinion. i was reading his requirements, and i felt in order to fill his needs, he would most likely go with IIS FTP Server with network management, and manage users and security with AD.

I hate to keep bugging people but from researching Active Directory it appears that it is only for Windows Servers (and I have WinXP). Am I missing something here?

I tried bullet ftp last night and couldn't get the home directory to show up when I logged in from another computer, even though I assigned one and had all the correct settings (I assume). I will try again later.

Do you have WinXP Home or Pro? I believe Pro does support AD, while Home doesn't. Anyone more informed, please correct me if that's incorrect.
