Muddy Ableton

My friend has a MacBook with Ableton and one of those trigger-finger pads for mixing. How come his mixes sound a bit like the frequency range is really narrow? I can only describe it as muddy/cloudy/murky-sounding...

What device determines sound fidelity in the Ableton setup?

I've heard rumours if you use a bootleg copy of ableton the sound quality will degrade. No idea how close to the truth that is, but I heard it from a fairly knowledgeable source who wouldn't say something like that about music software if he didn't mean it.

The weird sounds would probably be due to the way he is time stretching.
Personally I hate the way Ableton sounds with time stretching.

He has a legitimate copy, so I don't think the problem lies there. Suffice it to say that it's like hearing the difference between a set mixed on a Xone and a set mixed on the cheap mixer. I'm not hearing the crispness/loudness that I want to hear (I have to turn the volume of his mixes up significantly higher than other mixes). Somewhere along the way of signal processing, the original fidelity is being degraded...

Mostly using 320kbps Beatport originals. Not sure about compressors/filters, but I assume he uses some filters in for certain parts of his mixes.

Is Ableton fidelity a hardware issue or software issue? I'm still not sure.

It's gotta be software. It has mostly to do with the time-stretching algorithms that were implemented. I don't mind the speedy, not-so-good sounding ones for live purposes (obviously it's needed even with today's CPUs), but when exporting a set, I think it should be set to a higher quality, even if it takes longer.

I have a trigger-finger and I use it with Ableton and it sounds fine, I don't seem to have any narsty-ness. On occasion though when switching basslines it can sound clicky or distorted a bit.

A lot of things it could be has already been mentioned.

But there are other more complex things that could be at work, often the complaint with Ableton is that it distorts bass and makes the bass sound "muddy" and seeing as how most house tunes have very present basslines, it can totally screw up your shit.

Which version of Live are you using again? If it's a tiefed version make SURE you know what version you are using because if you can be sure and can post the version on TA I can try to post a screenshot of what "may" be the problem.

He's using an M-Audio Firewire Audiophile soundcard.

As for the warping question, he just warps tracks straight (song on 'repitch' mode, not 'complex'). He plays stuff at around 125-128, well within a regular, prog house range...
