Question SIN question

Can staffing/employment agencies demand person's SIN number for so-called background check for clients they work for? Or is this illegal? I refused to provide an agency with my SIN number yesterday, and the agent's argument was that "she works for different clients and she needs to check people she sends over to them"..

yeah that's fine, employer has a right to do that

I'm talking about 3-rd party employment agency.. I'm not sure how it works here, that's why I asked.. while I was waiting at the reception, the receptionist and one of the agents were looking over someone's personal details, and it seems they have a whole database of SIN's there!

yeah I've been to 2 already, and neither of them asked me for it, while this agent claimed "she worked for other companies and it's a standard procedure for them"

I wouldn't put your SIN on a job application.

Just put "to be provided at interview" in the spot.

Your SIN shouldn't be given out to anybody who asks and it certainly shouldn't be put on a form that could go you know where.

To do a background check they may require your SIN - but they aren't going to do a background check until late in the interview process (probably just before giving you an offer). I'd say once an offer is near - giving your SIN for a background check shouldn't be a problem.

Just don't give it out to anybody who asks. Protect your SIN (like your PIN).

Sorry guys, mental today and I didn't notice.

Ok, here's the deal. When you COMMENCE TEMPORARY WORK for an employment agency, you have to give them your SIN details so that they can pay you.

Registration solely shouldn't mean you have to provide your SIN (and legally you don't have to) BUT your SIN shows your residence status and eligibility to work. My SIN starts with a 9 so that would automatically make someone ask me for my visa. Someone without a SIN isn't eligible to work here.

Basically, the agency is more than likely just wanting to check that you are eligible to work in this country - trust me, there is nothing worse than finding the perfect person for their dream job then realizing they require sponsorship.
