Nord Lead 3 taken off the market?

OK, so as I was searching around, I noticed that the Nord Lead 3 does not appear to be sold at any of the online music shops anymore. A few phone calls confirmed that most of these places are not stocking it anymore. I wonder if Clavia is clearing the way for the new Nord Wave that is supposed to be coming out soon (later this year?).

From what I have read on Clavia's site, it appears that the new Nord Wave is the next version of the Nord Lead with some new features such as built in effects for the first time as well as the ability to import your own wave files for use as oscillator waveforms.

Anyone know anything about this?

The Nord Lead 3 was discontinued due to the rotary encoders containing hazardous material. So you wont be seeing them any time soon anywhere.

It's most likely not dangerous to the user but rather for the environment if it were to be thrown away. Just like the E-MU 1820 soundcard that was discontinued because it contained lead.

Where did you read that? Certainly wasn't the official word from E-MU unless they said it very recently...

The Nordlead 3 is out of production, due to RoHS issues. Some parts, like the display, did not comply with the new RoHS regulations, so it cannot be sold anymore in a big part of the world.

That may be a good thing in the long run for current owners of the NL3. I'm no expert here, but maybe taking it out of production like that might increase its value on the second hand market over time.

That all depends on the architecture of the Nord Wave...if it is based on the Nord Lead 3 and has just added wavetables to teh mix then I don't think the value will increase...but if the oscillators are competely changed and the sound architecture is different, then yes it will increase marginally, or stay at an average cost. It all depends on how many were produced and are sold.

It looks like they have dispensed with the rotary encoders on the Nord Wave prototype, so that would definitely back up what Limit has stated about the rotary encoders having hazarous materials. It looks like they went back to the NL2-style knobs. Of course the press photo is only the prototype so they may change that when the final product is released.

*sigh*

I don't like NL2 style knobs. I absolutely love our NL3 rack we have at school. You change a patch, and the leds on the rotary knobs snap accordingly!

I seriously doubt the Nord Wave would take a step backward like that. How hard is it to just redesign the rotary encoders so they aren't "harmful."

Hmm. I'm going to go play with the NL3 tomorrow.
