From scratch new producer, a month later, and I just feel like talking..
Hey all, well, After being an edm nut for the most part of my life I got into the whole production bit (started from scratch about a month ago). I study maths at the lse and no education in music whatsoever.. except for my ears and what 'sounds good' to me!

Well all too many of you may be familiar with the drill, taught myself cubase first, experimented a bit. Got all excited and thought my first track was off the hook but then reflected at its lameness later.

Anyway, after my first blunder I thought instead of posting amateur tracks and waiting for responses and working from there id rather benefit from saving myself and everyone else the time and work on reading up and cramming my brain with as much production lingo and tricks as i could. Because, hey, everythings been asked before.

So I started reading up on programming subtractive synthesis, basic music theory, dynamics processing and drum programming, Approaching each one as a seperate topic. A month later I still have all my producing life to learn and read and experience but I thought Id benefit on some feedback.

I feel rather than going all out working aimlessly track after track id much rather benefit from working with the parts. I spend my day working on different drum tracks, programming synths, writing melodies. Saving the mastering bit for when I feel im good enough to give 'putting it all together' a go.

Anyway, I thought now after a month Id benefit from getting some feedback and working from there. This is a beat structure and bassline I wrote yesterday with a very basic intro and outro synth. So if anyone could give this a listen, Id love to work with the feedback (at the risk of embarrasing myself in front of some awesome producers ). Ive also saved it as a direct download link (skipping the bot protection and timer nonsense most file hosting seems to have nowadays)

Well, there arnt much in there to comment. However you are on the right track. More psytrance vibe with some nice effects, however the percs arnt that "fun", but keep going!

for a beginner its very good..keep up the good work. Some of the sounds I don't like but hey thats me. Your bassline is very simple but thats expected in the beginning...Best advice I can give you is...Don't look for ways to get things done the easy way..Like looping drum patters off a simple drum sequencer...you will never get that organic feeling like programing your own drums...its hard at first but with practice you will get it. I'm not saying using a drum sequencer is bad but you still have to do your own grunt work to get it sounding that much better and not robotic. One of the worst tings I hear in a lot of new producers tracks is very robotic quantized to hell and back percussion. Good start so far. you did a lot better than I did when I first started.

so i think u just wanted feedback on ur work that youve prob been at for over a year!

everythin about it sounded very weak! and lifeless!

Frankly, ive worked my ass off at it for a month and i have something to show for my efforts. Since im new and I dont have the time to play your immature little bashing games Im going to ask that you please avoid responding to my posts from now on if you really have nothing useful to say. Itll save us both a lot of time.

give the guy a break he just started out. I think people need positive feedback in the beginning to get better. Bashing someone who just started out is not the way to go dude.

don't be so mathematical in your approach

i haven't listened to the clip, but the best way to learn IMO is making tracks and feeling what goes well together rather than making one area clinically or technically correct

music should be about passion and emotion which you obviously have, it will take time but you will get there

Thank you all for the comments. Im going to work on all you have suggested. Been kind of slow for the time being because i have my damn end of year exams.. I have gathered from here and other forums that its mainly the bassline which needs working out, so im going to work on that. To be honest im bored of this beat so im going to start another one fresh as soon as im done working out programming some good bassline synths. Heh.. Luke, man i know what you mean about being mathematical.. its just the approach i go with solving a problem.. old habits die hard i guess, but theres no shortage of passion. Im taking the year out of uni this year to concentrate on music production..

Im going to check out some of the tunes posted by other tas and look for production techniques. Thanks a bunch!

Yes, you got me jey.. im sorry that in the 15 years ive been producing ive obviously done something to offend you. To each his own, And unknowingly you have just given my production the biggest compliment of everyone, Im glad you said i wasnt capable of learning what i have so far in the time that i have.. gives me a lot of hope man! thanks
